With outlets both in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, café enthusiasts can expect the established brand’s trusted stamp on quality specialty coffee, sumptuous all-day brunch fare with an elevated twist and a relaxed, easy breezy vibe that encourages lingering a little longer over your cup of joe.

Fans of CMCR will find all their favourite signatures alongside food, coffee and retail offerings exclusive to Common Man Coffee Roasters Joo Chiat (CMCR JC). CMCR JC embraces community, drawing in the wider neighbourhood to access their coffee recycling programme which fashions coffee waste into usable wares. Collaborations with CMCR JC’s neighbours to feature their offerings in monthly menu exclusives are also brewing and in the pipeline.

At CMCR JC, clean industrial finishes meet Art deco with a unique contemporary and quirky twist. Natural light floods the dining room through full floor to wall glass panelling while bold splashes of blue and brass offset the blond wood used as a nod to the viking era.

An avid follower of Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) since the opening of their flagship store in Martin Road, I visited their newly opened outlet in Joo Chiat Road.

Fitting right into the vibrant Joo Chiat neighbourhood this open concept café reminded me of the wonderful cafes I used to frequent in Sydney. With a bar facing out to the road and an indoor and outdoor dining area, this lent a relaxed atmosphere as soon I stepped in.

So consistent in serving top quality food I was once again wowed by the elegantly presented breakfast and all-day brunch plates. Open from 6.30am I thought this to be a winning point for CMCR as many cafes in Singapore open much later.

Exclusive to the Joo Chiat venue are delicious sweet and savoury sourdough pancakes. While I am usually partial to anything savoury, I must say the sweet pancakes were the stunner this time round. And to think I was contemplating giving them a miss.

Served with chocolate almond ganache, super crunchy almond pralines and a totally delicious zesty citrus marmalade that was to die for. I started with a half pancake and of course could not resist the remaining half eventually.

That is testament to a meal so good! The best part about dining at CMCR is that food is complemented with such great coffee. Sustainably sourced, specialty coffee is roasted fresh in Singapore and prepared by baristas trained in CMCR’s very own academy.

Should you be a coffee connoisseur wanting a lesson on drip coffee, there is a barista on hand to demonstrate and explain various coffee varieties. I tried the COE # 21 from Ethiopia that produced different notes (nutty, sweet) when dripped into different-shaped serving cups.

Another super delicious item on the breakfast menu and one I would highly recommend if it’s your first time at CMCR, is the Umami Mushroom Avocado Toast.

Created with oyster & maitake mushrooms, it is served with a red onion pickle and togarashi. Portions at CMCR are pretty large so I usually skip dinner if I have lunch / brunch there. This beauty is a steal for $22.

I know from friends who frequent CMCR too that the Turkish Common Man breakfast is also very popular. Served with a pumpkin hummus, fresh cucumber, pomegranate and herbs this is great to wipe every bit off the plate with warm pita quarters.

I would say that CMCR is a spot you’d have to make a regular, as there are so many amazing dishes on the menu. Try a different one on every visit then decide your top pick.

Being a person of variety I would prefer to go with a few friends and share plates. That affords a bit of this and a bit of that which for me, is very satisfying. These breakfast treats are served all day so rock in anytime before 6pm.

The lunch menu though is served from 10am and closes at 5.30pm. I had the best Caesar Salad I have ever had in Singapore. A sizeable plate of crunchy lettuce dressed with charred brussel sprouts and deliciously stunning wafers of creamy stracciatella cheese.

The moist chicken breast and focaccia croutons are accompanied by Manchego laced Caesar dressing. I could see myself having just this on my next visit with a flat white.

For burger fans CMCR have a Smash Burger served with herb fries. Topped on beef patties are cheddar, onion jam, lettuce and a deep red beetroot BBQ sauce.

If you still have space to try more there are loads of sides and desserts to devour. Perhaps even a takeout of almond cake, churros or flourless chocolate cake for tea at home.

Juices, sodas, smoothies, craft beers and wines make for a full experience, one I am convinced you will thoroughly enjoy. Nothing common at CMCR!

I was at CMCR this morning with my husband. He had never been to CMCR before and I have been boasting about the establishment since we were hosted there. I had been many times with other friends to Martin Road and always loved it.

This morning though we ordered;
1. Avocado on ciabatta which was soft and chewy not how it is usually well toasted. The portion was small too compared to a usual CMCR portion which I often boast to others is more than enough so I usually skip a meal that day.

2. Turkish - hummus was sweet it was awful. Pide that came with it was thick and chewy too. Not toasted. The meal came so fast I felt it was thrown together like a fast food joint.

My husband is a coffee connoisseur and he took one sip of his brew and declared it was like water. So light and lacking oomph.

Service staff kept interrupting us asking if they could;

- clear an empty plate when it is evident they could just take it away

- top up our water when it is evident the glass was empty

This training needs to be stepped up as they are interrupting patrons for obvious nonsensical things, every time they ask us a question.

I feel the quality of CMCR had gone down the drain. For the price point which is much higher than most cafes we go to, they can only afford to charge this if quality of meals and service are upheld.

I for one will not be going there again. I felt so ripped off for $75 at 8.30am this morning when I would have usually walked out feeling it was every cent well spent.

What a disaster!
