Third World Improv

Set up in 2015 by Gabe Mercado and the members of the pioneering improv group SPIT, Third World Improv aims to produce improv practitioners who are authentic, innovative, culturally and socially relevant and a lot of fun.

Our instructors are all members of SPIT and have between nine and thirteen years of experience performing improvisation, highlighted by representing the Philippines at the Manila, Hong Kong, Beijing, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Amsterdam Improv Festivals.

They have also learned from some of the best teachers in improv including Paul Sills, Jason Chin. Armando Diaz. Mark Sutton, Shaun Landry, Ed Reggi, The Second City, Treehouse, Magnet Theater and many more.

This course serves as an introduction to improvisational theater and its enriching techniques for finding joy in everyday life through specialized online, real-time video interactions. Through eight synchronous sessions, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of improv and its practical applications with short form games that inculcate the philosophies and methods unique to Third World Improv.

Prior improv or performance experience NOT required. Open to participants anywhere in the world.

About the Instructor

Monica Cordero-Cruz has been performing with the Philippines premier improv theater group SPIT for 14 years and has been teaching Applied Improv for eight, in Metro Manila and all around the world. She has experience in academic and corporate training in various roles - be it facilitating or acting - for different groups and companies, the latest of which was a workshop for students of Tainan University of Technology in Taiwan. She is a founding member of Third World Improv, the first school dedicated to teaching the art of improvisation in the Philippines. Outside of improv, Monica is an Interior Designer and a mother of two.
