I was recently treated to a much-missed sojourn to a cocktail bar, Set-of-Six, on Craig Road in Singapore. This literature inspired, cosy refuge is home to imaginative signature cocktails and lovely morsels that marry well and feel like a natural match. The atmosphere is inspired by Joseph Conrad’s literary works of the same name, which is half the fun of the experience.
Upon arriving to meet the other members of my party on a late afternoon/early evening rendezvous, I entered a small anteroom that immediately divorced me form the bustle of the outside walkway and began my journey in Joseph Conrad’s literary world. I has a feeling of a speakeasy, just not quite as naughty. Given restrictions on entertainment, especially for cocktail bars, it still feels like you are getting away with something. And something special, you are getting indeed.
After the now normal temperature reading and check-in procedure, I was guided through a door, leading to the first inner sanctum. Rich hues and low lights greeted me as I entered the main space of the bar. The backlit wall of the bar illuminated the first glimpse of the lush interior decoration. Soft textiles, artistic lighting and a variety of seating options were before me. As I was meeting others and we all need to reserve seating at any outlet gathering, I was immediately shown to our party’s reserved table. In our case, the assigned booth seating was directly opposite the bar and directly back, perfectly positioned for people watching whilst the other members of the party arrived.
Soon we were all gathered and scanning the drinks and food menu. The order of the evening or our party was to sample signature cocktails with a variety of food items. Our party of four collaborated to explore as much of the offered variety as we possibly could during our designated seating time slot.
Champagne, some good wines, and standard cocktails are all available, but if you like an interesting adventure through creative mixology as I do, you will want to try one of their specially curated cocktails. Set-of-Six has an amazing menu that belies the ingredient and content list. The combinations of flavors and the unique preparation of the cocktails left most of us surprised by the taste sensation that arrived in the artistically presented concoctions.
The creative cocktails, impressive champagne and spirits menu are not all that Set-of-Six brings to the table. The amazing and equally creative food menu does not disappoint with lovely food options to add to our experience. Lobster and Fennel Ravioli, Sea-bass Ceviche with popcorn and Double Fried Chips are just a few of the wonderful taste sensations that accompanied our cocktail selection, creating absolute delight.
Beyond the dim lights of the elegant main room is a door to yet another surprise within - a private dining room complete with a special button to summon champagne, which lights-up in the main room when pressed. Some of our party have suggested that one be put in every bar. My thinking: “Perhaps there is a home version that can be arranged?”
All kidding aside, Set-of-Six is literary inspired in both décor and menu linked to Joseph Conrad’s six short stories that were inspired by his colonial British Naval adventures. Thus, our experience literarily transports us to a special getaway from the challenges and uncertainties of the times we live in today.
My suggestion for you to maximize your experience is to grab a few friends, book a table seating for anytime between 4pm and 10:30pm and enjoy this novel experience in good company. Feel the embrace of the atmosphere and imbibe both beverage and morsels with togetherness, a little laughter and some joyous memory making.
Set of Six is the coolest spot this Expat Choice reporter has been in ages. Every aspect whispers luxury in the classiest way possible. This beautifully appointed cocktail and dining spot is inspired by Joseph Conrad's novel, Set of Six. The marriage of cocktails and cuisine take you on a journey of Conrad's sailing adventures.
It's easy to miss the entrance to Set of Six. It's intentional. When you do open the door you will find yourself in what appears to be an apothecary shop with traditional spices and vintage cabinetry. This is a nod to secret passageways and caches of the smuggler's life. Yet waiting for you behind the velvet curtain is a gorgeous room with unique furnishings, a giant disco ball, pink palms, monkey light fixtures, a hidden private dining room and the cheeky "bring more champagne" button.
The journey takes you to six places: Spain, Italy, Great Britain, France, Chile and the Seven Seas. Set of Six's executive chef, Gonzalo Landin, has curated two dishes and two cocktails for each journey. Chef Landin is well known from Binomio which is located next door. The incredible dishes are paired with the most creative and delicious cocktails. And the champagne is flowing in abundance. Make sure to take a trip to the restrooms and stop for an Instagram worthy shot posing in the "Morticia Addams" cane throne bathed in pink neon. Underscoring the whole vibe are the tunes coming from an in-house DJ.
This is an experience not to be missed. Set of Six just opened and reservations are filling up quickly. Thanks to Expat Choice Singapore for always being in the know of the best spots around.
I was excited to hear this new venture popping up in my neighbourhood. Craig Road & Keong Saik is only getting better everyday, but a speakeasy wasn't what I expected to be coming next.
I'm a light drinker so I care for a cocktail menu that has a focus on premium spirits, fresh fruits and creativity. At least then I feel guilt free in my rebellious consumption. This place is doing this expertly with the added touch of Spanish food pairing in a a gastronomic story.
We all know that a good story is the best way to convey a message, but having some of my favourite flavours and exciting takes on comfort foods made this heaven
Its clear this place is going to be the new talk of the town for sure!
My standouts on the menu has to be The Mutiny cocktail, albeit my Caribbean roots made me a sucker for a good rum and a lover for all things with pineapple but the pairing of both Trinidadian & Venezuelan rum with the sweetness of pineapple and balanced out by an aromatic bitters made this my perfect cocktail. As I was taken through the voyage of the perfectly paired meals I was delighted to sooth my British comfort food with triple cooked chips & branston sauce. Ok I'm an 80s kid and not everyone will understand the nostalgia that comes with branston pickle but at lease they will appreciate that if your chips go cold, when they're cooked to this perfection there is no love lost!
Great work and big congrats to Chef Gonzolo and the team.

The absolutely stunning space at this cocktail bar is a complimentary treat for the eyes, tastefully decked out with glitz, disco lights, hanging monkeys and pink-feathered trees. Beyond their delicious cocktails to sip on, you get wasabi peas to munch away too — so head on down for a whimsical time.
