Melanie McCollin-Walker is an acclaimed artist who has spent many years living and creating in Singapore.
This week On the Edge will be presented here in Singapore - New Paintings by Melanie McCollin Walker May 2-26 Monday to Friday 8.30am-4pm
On the Edge, is the result of Melanie McCollin-Walker's recent residency on Bruny Island. The artist's studio is located in an extraordinarily beautiful, quaint and eccentric little farm in Roseville, with a vast outlook over Bull Bay, Storm Bay and Iron Pot lighthouse. This dramatic landscape, its isolation and rich history were the inspiration for Melanie's exhibition. The works are a powerful response to Bruny's pure light, ever changing weather conditions and unique and diverse landscape.
Melanie McCollin-Walker began her artistic journey whilst growing up on the island of Barbados. Melanie’s travels have taken her all around the world and it is this nomadic lifestyle, which has been the major source of inspiration for her work. The landscape, and in particular, her signature stormy seas and skies, provide the framework within which the artist’s journey takes place.
The resulting paintings are light-filled and dramatic.
Melanie was shortlisted for the Clifton’s Art Prize in 2013 and 2016, winning the People’s Choice Award in 2013. Expat Choice invite you to view Melanie’s exhibition, On the Edge, inspired by her recent artist residency on Bruny Island in Tasmania, which will be shown in the Australian High Commission’s atrium May 2-26 Monday to Friday from 8.30am-4pm.
Melanie McCollin-Walker is a painter, who began her artistic journey during early childhood whilst growing up on the island of Barbados. Inspired by her nomadic lifestyle, Melanie’s paintings are reflective of her travels. She does not paint from photographs, but instead from a reflection of a memory. Resulting in emotive, light filled, dramatic landscapes.
McCollin-Walker has been invited to participate in several solo and group exhibitions and was shortlisted for the Clifton's art prize where she went on to win the coveted People's Choice Award. Her work is highly sought after and is represented in private and public collections globally, including the Luciano Benetton Foundation’s ‘Imago Mundi’.
The artist says of her practice: “I spend most of my days in the studio chasing echoes of memories and trying to bring them out of the shadows and into the light. Trapping light on the canvas is quite elusive...but when it happens I’ve been told the outcome can be magical.”
