Could Boeuf be the holy grail of steakhouses?
Singapore is generously apportioned with many a fine steakhouse – with the highest quality meats, the finest epicurean delights and multi award winning wines. Of course it is well accepted here that indulging in one of these fine meat establishments will put a fairly hefty dent in one’s wallet.
It never seemed feasible that the highest quality steaks could be enjoyed with exceptional value until we happened across Boeuf, tucked away in the popular Telok Ayer enclave.
Entering under an imposing steel cow head, the cosy and intimate steakhouse imminently reminds us of the fare we will soon indulge in – the dry ageing cabinet, artistic pictures and statues of cows and a deep red interior capture our gaze.
We are warmly greeted by Pierre, the Belgian GM who is no stranger to restaurant success in Singapore – this being his latest venture, which on a Wednesday evening is close to capacity.
The menu is succinct and true to a classic steakhouse with appetiser favourites including the generously apportioned Burratina laden with juicy ripe tomatoes and the most perfectly crisp garlic toast and the Bone Marrow & Roasted Garlic (with grilled toast, portobello mushroom, roasted pine nuts and parsley). What is a welcome change is that almost all the appetisers are under $30 – Burratina included. We quickly get a sense why this new spot is already very popular.
Our main is the Signature Prime Rib of which there are four different grades to choose from – we enjoy the dry aged Australian cut in a generous 1.2kg portion. It is cooked to perfection, presented perfectly on a platter surrounded by condiments and garlic confit. The delicious sides to accompany include a perfect potato gratin and crunchy green Kenyan beans.
Aside from the Prime Rib, there are plenty of other meaty options to choose from including short ribs, ribeye, tenderloin, picanha and sirloin – with most of these very well priced at under $40.
After such a hearty and great value meal there isn’t a lot of room for dessert, but we manage to enjoy a classic Crème Brulee.
Boeuf has certainly made a popular impression on the Singapore dining scene since opening and it is definitely a place one can frequent again and again for top quality meats without the hefty price tag.
