Phoon Huat, the household store that defaults in my mind when I think of baking, has extended its shores into the gourmet world. With more than 500 gourmet selections available in its flagship store at Star Vista or online, I was curious and excited to sample some of this new fare.

My first foray into the new Red Man (Phoon Huat brand) world as I stepped into the St. Regis Hotel, was to sample a cocktail made with flavour genius Da Vinci Gourmet. Having started in Seattle, their lineup of products included syrups, sauces, fruit & beverage mixes, health boosts and more.

I chose to sample a cocktail Gold Beyond, that showcased peach garden and dry bitter orange syrups. Coupled with whiskey, Umeshu, lime juice and ginger ale, I was enamoured of this concoction. A great way to start the food journey if you are one to steer away from sickeningly sweet drinks, like me.

Sipping on this refreshing cocktail, I began my food sojourn with Carabinero prawns, sashimi grade that hail from fishing grounds in the Eastern Central Atlantic Region. Have a taste of this and you’ll know the difference!

Nova Scotian Atlantic lobsters and Argentinian shrimps (known as the sweetest prawn in the world) graced our table. Wow they were certainly sweet. We were elevating Phoon Huat in our minds. This gourmet food was second to none. Excited at the prospect of accessing such top quality fare at prices less than the open market was a big draw.

With years of experience behind them, Riverine meat backed by Teys  who shine with accolades for the last 75 years, was my next stop. Free Rein Meat Co. also on offer, I decided to try some Wagyu beef flap and rib eye. Roasted to perfection, I tasted the full succulence that oozed flavour.

There were so many stations to savour. I knew it was going to be impossible to try them all. Wines, charcuterie, oysters, plant-based meals, goats milk, all things that a household would consume.

I was excited at the prospect of Phoon Huat making this happen. In my mind they were a trusted name who believed in bringing quality to its customers, at affordable prices.

I kept some space for more prawns and oysters. Watching people as they milled about this beautiful venue, I realized a huge cheese station with plant-based options was calling out.

Limiting myself to three varieties of cheddar, I went back for a second round. Noticing that my selection was small but for every morsel I had, I went back for more, I knew the quality of what I was savouring was really good. Sourced from renowned suppliers and producers, this was my kind of marketplace to romp around.

INIC coffee from Japan, an acronym for “It’s Not Instant Coffee” boasts a unique selling point of barista coffee that is freeze-dried immediately. In stick form until opened, it has a shelf life of 3-5 years. A premier coffee with nine types of single origin coffees I headed to that station to grab a cup.

This would be perfect for travel, I thought. To have premier coffee at my disposal, I would most certainly start my day on cloud nine. Grabbing a cuppa I retreated to my table but not before picking up a plate of bread and butter pudding.

For someone like me who is a baker, every sense in me was screaming “this is the best pudding I had ever had in my life”. Topped with a stunning vanilla sauce and an apple puree from Ravifruit, I honestly considered going back for another serve. Coupled with coffee, this was a perfect way to end this outstanding show of gourmand produce under the Red Man label.

A doggie bag from Ravifruit, filled with fruit and vegetables, this incredible company began with a mere two persons. The family is much bigger today connecting with fruit growers around the world.

It was almost overwhelm for me, to be in a room surrounded by so many gourmet brands. Looking through Phoon Huat’s product catalogue I noticed so much more. Canned seafood, caviar & roe, truffle, mushroom, pasta, specialty oils & vinegar, chocolates and the list goes on.

Those of you like me who are Phoon Huat customers, will undoubtedly feel my passion and excitement at this new arm of products. While reliability shines through having provided baking supplies for the last 76 years, I am also in awe at how they have gone beyond to give households an opportunity to scale up their larders.

Go Red Man!
