Who doesn’t love a good Sunday brunch? And boy, aren’t we excited that proper buffet-style brunches are back, after a break of over two years.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the fantastic Sunday brunch at Opus Bar and Grill, located at Voco hotel, in Orchard. I had just spent the morning shopping at ION Orchard, and looked forward to indulging in some scrumptious food, and I was not disappointed. As we entered the packed restaurant, one of the friendly staff welcomed us, and had us seated in no time, sipping a refreshing glass of champagne.
I started my meal, at the Japanese corner, which was replete with fresh sashimi, and sushi, along with cold noodles, and some Asian salads. Being a Japanese food junkie, I savoured the salmon sashimi, and sushi rolls. My next stop was the cold seafood counter, which had an excellent range of seafood on offer, including lobster, tiger prawns, king crab legs, as well as fresh oysters. I also did a quick stop at the charcuterie counter, which has an excellent selection of meats, and 15 varieties of different cheese. The wagyu pastrami, and chorizo salami were both appetising.
For my main course, I had the luscious Asian wok-fried chili crab cooked in that classic sweet-spicy sauce, which is always a winner. There was also Asian-style fried rice, and whole prawns wrapped in a delicious sauce, which had a hint of curry leaves. I also tried the beef bourguignon which was mouth-wateringly tender. For pasta lovers, there is an Italian counter with fresh pasta, where the chef can customise a delectable platter for you, in a jiffy.
But the star of the restaurant is the open-flame grill. There are a wide variety of meats cooked live, such as slow-roasted Australian prime rib, lamb, as well as chicken. I asked the chef to grill some spicy fish for me, and she served us a mouth-watering grilled pomfret. It was cooked in a flavorsome fusion sauce using local ingredients, such as kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, as well Thai chili sauce. The result was a slightly sweet, spicy, sour sauce that had a kick to it, and completely elevated the taste of the fish.
I also tried out the restaurant’s fun DIY mojito counter, where you choose your own ingredients and mixers, and make a mojito. I muddled some blackberries with mint leaves, and made myself a delightful, and refreshing cocktail.
Of course, I still had some space left for desserts, and was not disappointed with the wide selection on offer, including cheesecakes, a chocolate fondue, bread butter pudding, and chocolate pralines. But my favourite was the custardy crème brûlée, with its perfect brittle top, and the perfectly crisped macarons. What a delightful afternoon it had been, I would definitely be back again to partake in the wonderful brunch at Opus.
