Tucked away in the vibrant Mondrian Hotel precinct lies a culinary oasis that’s stirring up quite a buzz – Tribal. The latest addition to the Mondrian's gastronomic scene beckons patrons with promises of contemporary Asian grill delights. As a beacon of sustainable dining, Tribal showcases a dedication to locally and regionally sourced ingredients that not only tantalise the taste buds but also reflect a commitment to ethical dining practices.
Step into Tribal and you’re hit with the aroma of wood-fired grills, setting the stage for a dining experience that’s anything but ordinary. The menu is a love letter to Asian cuisine, boasting dishes that are both familiar and inventive. The warm and earthy interior design and the scent of char permeating the air, sets the stage for a culinary journey that celebrates the essence of authentic Asian flavours. Each dish is meticulously crafted, showcasing a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation.
Amongst the standout dishes that left a lasting impression on our palates were the flatbread with abura miso butter. This simple yet indulgent starter sets the tone for what's to come, teasing the taste buds with its char and rich umami flavours.
For those craving a refreshing start, the Japanese satsuma tomatoes with pomelo, endives, sorrel, dashi and wasabi were vibrant and bursting with flavour, tasting how real tomatoes should taste. The colours and bold flavours of this dish dance on the palate, celebrating the freshness of the ingredients.
For seafood lovers, the hamachi crudo (Japanese amberjack) is a must-try, with its delicate flavours and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Served with charred orange ponzu, pickled jicama and ikura, the delicate balance of flavours and textures in this dish delightfully showcases the chef Keith Wan's skillful mastery of his craft.
Equally impressive is one of our personal favourites, the Santori Organic Chicken, adorned with an exotic gai yang glaze and accompanied by a zesty green chilli relish. Each bite of this succulent dish is a testament to Tribal's commitment to quality and excellence.
For those seeking a taste of the exotic, the Octopus with sambal bajak and green papaya is a must-try. The tender octopus, perfectly charred and infused with spicy sambal flavours, will take your taste buds on a wild ride. Tender, spicy, and downright addictive.
No visit to Tribal would be complete without indulging in the Wagyu claypot rice, Ta comfort food lover’s dream, with its rich beefy goodness and fragrant jasmine rice.
And for those with a sweet tooth, the Bundt Cake with highland park 12 years single malt Scotch whiskey, smoked vanilla ice cream, and kumquat is a fitting finale to an exotic and epic dining experience. The decadent cake, paired with the smoky sweetness of the ice cream and the tartness of the kumquat, is just the sweet ending we were after.
Now, let's not forget about Tribal's cocktail menu, because it's a whole vibe of its own. Picture this: creative concoctions that perfectly complement the bold flavours of the grill. From classic favourites with an Asian twist to innovative creations that push the boundaries of mixology, there's something for every palate.
Sip on the refreshing Yuz Want More with Ketel One vodka, tomato water, yuzu soy and pickled tomato, that pairs perfectly with the smoky flavours of the grill. Or perhaps indulge in something more bold like The Rebel - Sze Chuan peppercorn infused dark rum with a dash of mace and cinnamon syrup that is then rounded out with bitters.
Tribal stands as another welcome addition to the culinary excellence in the Mondrian Hotel precinct. With its commitment to sustainable dining practices, locally sourced ingredients and innovative Asian flavour combinations, it has quickly become a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts seeking a taste of the extraordinary. So, whether you're a seasoned epicurean or simply someone looking to indulge in a memorable dining experience, make sure to add Tribal to your list of culinary adventures. Your taste buds will thank you.
