Jia He Chinese Restaurant, so easy to get to by cab or train at Farrer Park, was a box full of surprises. Fitting with the year-end Season where joy over sumptuous spreads went hand-in-hand, I was full of expectation.

General Manager Ho, a big part of the fourth anniversary celebrations, was about to showcase their new a la carte menu offered. Where Harmony Blossoms into Prosperity, Founders of Jia He Chinese Restaurant succeeded in creating a warm, welcoming ambience so unlike traditional ones.

Jia He Chinese Restaurant have so many specials to choose from like the weekday lunch, dim sum galore at $33++ with a minimum of 4 persons. The fine Cantonese cuisine I was about to savour was evident in the first dim sum dish, a Century Egg with Preserved Sakura Ginger and Vintage Vinegar. It was a cold refreshing oomph that got my taste buds going.

Part of this dim sum variety, an interesting twist of crispy soft-shell crab with Gula Melaka and a crowd favourite, the stir-fried carrot cake with XO sauce. Very fine with light flavours, representative of a top-quality restaurant but with prices so reasonable I felt this was a steal.

As I looked down the varieties on offer I was making a note to come back. There were so many amazing top quality dishes that were tantalising my taste buds. If I was thinking that, you know reservations are a must. Most guests become regulars. Good food at great prices. Fits the bill.

The dinner a la carte buffet which consists of a choice of three main meals and a dessert, chosen from a pre-set list is another option. Some dishes may require a top-up for instance the Signature double-boiled rich chicken collagen soup with pig maw, shark’s fin and Sarawak pepper.

With every spoonful we had, there were more approvals around the table.  Perhaps the collagen was working it’s wonders already? Jokes aside this was a very heart-warming soup that would heal anyone needing it.

We decided to have the Signature baked chicken with aromatic ginger and tangerine peel. As the clay pot lid was lifted open, the aroma was inviting. We dug in to this tasty dish infused with warm flavours, a good match for the pelting rain outside.

An superior soup of double-boiled chicken with conpoy and shrimp wanton in a casserole graced our table next. Another wholesome dish perfect for a wintry day. As dishes arrived, I sensed the fine texture and quality to be the style at Jia He Chinese Restaurant that was consistently showing itself.

Even with the par-boiled giant Grouper tail, ginger, spring onion and preserved vegetables, I tasted the freshness of ingredients. A wonderful departure from sauce-laden restaurants that overpower tastes.

Jia He Chinese Restaurant took pride in serving clean dishes that activated our taste buds beyond measure. We commented that lucky were the people who worked in Little India for they had a stylish, reasonably-priced restaurant at their doorstep. Some lunch seekers came from further afar by train as it was pretty much a door-to-door journey.

The wok-fried tiger king prawn with Sarawak white pepper was another stunner. Wrapped in a foil, a fire was lit to cook the prawn within. Subtle and impactful, the prawn taste was elevated with the touch of aromatic pepper.

To end these amazing main meals was a wok-fried vermicelli with crystal prawn and conpoy done to perfection. I threw my hands up in the air! What can I say? I would definitely come back with more friends to try the other tempting dishes on the menu.

A restaurant I would highly recommend, Jia He Chinese Restaurant is a must-do for anyone and everyone. Even basic dishes like sweet and sour pork looked so appealing as we peered over the next tables’ dishes.

With so many desserts to choose from – warm and chilled, we were beyond words as we left, at how delicious and reasonably priced the dishes were.
