In the ever-changing culinary environment of Clarke Quay Central, Far East Organisation launches Chef X, a groundbreaking venture that follows the success of Baker X, which debuted in December 2021. Chef X acts as an incubator for home-based cooks, giving them the opportunity to operate a fully operational commercial restaurant for a period of four to eight weeks. This one-of-a-kind platform allows outstanding home cooks to realise their culinary aspirations in a professional atmosphere, encouraging creativity and innovation in the culinary world.
Popo's Kitchen, led by Jasmine Foo, is the latest addition to Chef X. Popo's Kitchen will be open from September 5 to October 30, 2024, and will provide a menu based on traditional Chinese food with a modern touch. Jasmine's culinary path demonstrates her enthusiasm for both cooking and nurturing. After a successful two-decade career in the preschool sector, she decided to pursue her ambition of sharing her passion for food with the larger community. Popo's Kitchen is a tribute to Jasmine's mother, fondly referred to as 'Popo' by her grandchildren, whose cuisine inspired Jasmine's creativity.
Popo's Kitchen's menu celebrates both legacy and innovation. Jasmine's handcrafted kuehs stand out among the offerings, demonstrating her commitment to quality and flavour. The Soon Kueh, priced at $1.70 a piece, is a delicate blend of premium dried prawns, mushroom, carrot, turnip and fresh coriander, all wrapped in a chewy skin made from a secret recipe involving four different types of flour.
The Mala Soon Kueh, priced at $1.90 per piece, provides a spicy touch by infusing mala spices into both the filling and the exterior. For a touch of luxury, the Truffle Mushroom Kueh ($2.40 a piece) mixes truffle-infused skin with a delicious blend of shiitake, oyster, and shimeji mushrooms seasoned with truffle paste.
Jasmine offers the Tom Yum Chicken Soon Kueh, which costs $2.20 per piece. This creative kueh is filled with chicken, straw mushrooms, and coriander, all seasoned with a house-made tom yum paste, providing an explosion of flavour with each bite.
Popo's Kitchen serves Jasmine's Quarter Chicken Leg with 2 Sides, which starts at $16. The chicken leg comes in five various flavours, including the popular Rosemary chicken, which is marinated with fresh rosemary, thyme, and excellent French butter before roasting to perfection. To round out their meal, diners can choose from a variety of sides, including Achar Salad, Mixed Green Salad, and Collagen Mixed Rice.
Another must-try is Popo's Kitchen's Fried Mee Siam with Sakura Prawns, which costs $9. This meal consists of rice vermicelli noodles stir-fried in a house-made mee siam sauce, topped with crisp Sakura Prawns, chives, and a julienned fluffy omelette, creating a delicious blend of textures and flavours that pay homage to traditional heritage cuisines.
Popo's Kitchen at Chef X is more than just a pop-up; it's an embodiment of tradition, passion, and culinary innovation, providing a dining experience that is both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
