Join our avid foodie reporter and news correspondent in Singapore, Sylvia Fernandes as she walks us through some of the new items of the better than ever expanded menu at Coastes, Sentosa Siloso Beach.
I spent a most amazing day at Coastes on Siloso Beach and wondered why I had not rocked up more often, especially during this Pandemic that had us restricted in so many ways.
From the time I got off the trolley and stepped into Coastes, the ambience of being at the beach lifted my entire being immediately. Whatever state of mind you are in this will be the game changer you need.
Just seeing people enjoy drinks and food at their table while others played in the sand, dipping in to the water occasionally, set the stage for a glorious afternoon.
My first order of the day was of course a margarita (pictured above). Frozen to my liking, it’s cool and refreshing take was just what I needed against the backdrop of the sun and sky.
So surreal to see ships in the background! I looked on with envy at how lucky I was to be living in Singapore where getting to the beach was a mere 10 minute drive. “I need to do this more often” was my thought at that moment.
Looking at the menu I noticed many new items. Being the adventurer that I am, I was up to try some of these. Starting with a breakfast favourite created with a touch of Mediteranean flair - scrambled eggs and forest mushrooms on pita bread (pictured below).
With a touch of Spanish onion, fresh spinach on creamy scrambled egg was served. I loved the pita bread touch! Many amazing treats are on offer. Bacon and arugula frittata or a chorizo & bacon stew with poached eggs.
Lots to choose from on the Coastes breakfast menu and all for $12 Onwards. Good portion to keep me happy till it was time for a late lunch. My fascination was more with some of the dishes that were Asian inspired.
I had to try the chilli crab dip with soft shell crab on the side served with mantou buns (pictured below). Traditionally found in seafood restaurants, this dish that Singapore is famous for has made its way to Coastes.
Lovely to share as a starter. If the 3 buns that come with it are not enough, a $3 top-up is all it takes to get your hands on a few more.
This $20 dish would be enough for me if I was on my own having lunch with a beer on the side. Picture the landscape! Beautiful and elegant don’t you think? Though after licking sauce off my fingers I’d say a tad less so!
Be sure to bring your swimmers just in case you feel like reprieve and a little dip in the water. That prepared me for my next drink. Black Russian! A drink I used to drink so many years ago but had forgotten. My old eye spotted it!
I paired it with another unique Asian twist on an old favourite – ayam panggang burger (pictured below). In Malay this translates to a grilled chicken burger. Sweet, spicy and full of flavor as the chicken is marinated in spices.
This is Malay street food at its best. So delightful to see how it’s combo with a sambal mayo, topped with pickled vegetables and an egg tasted like magic. It is a common sight in Ramadhan month when the aroma of ayam panggang is aplenty.
I don’t know about you but for me there is a natural tendency to want burgers or fish & chips when at the beach. Casual fare in the past, these meals are served in gourmet style today.
Perched on a bed of chips, I chomped into a good ole favourite - Coastes crispy beer-battered Atlantic cod fish and chips (pictured below). Simply served with tartare sauce on the side with a slice of lemon, this certainly hit the spot.
I decided a bottle of lemon Kombucha would hold me in good stead as the sun began to rear its head to its fullest. Amidst the gentle breeze that was blowing, it made for a lazy afternoon, totally chill, totally relaxed.
Thinking of patrons who like traditional fare, I thought the slipper lobster penne (pictured below) would be another great option. A very green dish was served to the table. Hmmm very green!
The delicious creamy herb pesto topped with crunchy bits of toasted breadcrumbs held a rich flavour for the al dente pasta. I have never had such tender lobster before. It was full of flavour - another “must have” on my next trip to Coastes!
As I looked around, many tables had a blue bucket with a jug of beer chilling in it. For $40 a jug (currently on promo at $28++) this 1664 Lager was pretty popular. A perfect fit in tropical weather!
It was time for dessert. I decided to try the chocolate cherry pot comprising exquisite layers of Griottine cherry cream cheese, dark bitter chocolate ganache topped with edible chocolate soil (pictured below).
A small pot but heavy. I would recommend not being territorial about your pot and sharing this divine delight with others on the table. Generosity at the end of the day is the name of the game don’t you think?
The food at Coastes caught me by surprise on a few counts. Not expecting so many new dishes on the menu since the last time I frequented, I was delighted to see many dishes with an Asian twist.
The quality of meals offered was top notch with generous portions and extremely well priced. It is no wonder Coastes is always busy. A tip if you’d like a quiet surrounding is to do a weekday.
