Following their historic Carnegie Hall debut, the Voices of Singapore Children's Choir received a resounding standing ovation from the audience on June 10, 2023. This momentous achievement marks a significant milestone for the choir as they became the first Singaporean children's choir to perform at the renowned venue.
Under the direction of Artistic Director and Composer-Conductor Dr Darius Lim, the choir delivered stunning renditions of choral arrangements of Singaporean folk tunes and international choral pieces that evening. The young singers demonstrated an impressive mastery of their craft with perfectly synchronised choreography, earning them a standing ovation and thunderous applause at the end of their performance segment.
"Darius Lim and the Voices of Singapore Children’s Choir gave an awe inspiring, passionate, life changing performance,” said Jeffery Redding, 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award Recipient. “I was on the edge of my seat the entire performance… Exhilarating in every way! I am a true fan!"
In addition to their performance at Carnegie Hall, the choir's visit to New York included a flash mob at Urban Hawker, where they sang a selection of local songs for both the hawkers and customers. They also had the privilege of performing a solo concert at the prestigious St. Patrick's Cathedral which included a one-hour repertoire of challenging choral classics, ending with songs from Singapore in different languages.
The concert was live-streamed and their performance of “Home” by Dick Lee can be viewed here.
"We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to represent Singapore on such a prestigious stage," said Dr Darius Lim, Artistic Director of the Voices of Singapore Children's Choir. "Our young singers have exceeded all expectations and showcased the incredible talent that Singapore has to offer. The standing ovations received both at Carnegie Hall and St. Patrick's Cathedral, are not only a testament to the hard work of our young singers but also a celebration of the high quality of choral music in Singapore."
With their triumphant performances at Carnegie Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Voices of Singapore Children's Choir has left an indelible mark on the international choral landscape. They are eager to continue sharing their music with a wider audience and look forward to future performances and collaborations that will further elevate the profile of Singaporean choral music.
