The Amerigo Vespucci, Italy's legendary naval training ship known as the "old lady of the sea," has departed Singapore, extending its global trip that began more than a year ago in Genoa. This was the ship's 26th port of call, and it left a lasting impression on both locals and expats. Hundreds, including Singapore's Italian population, gathered to bid the vessel a heartfelt farewell to the powerful tune "Con te partirò." Tens of thousands of people visited the Vespucci during its five-day visit, commemorating Italy's nautical culture and cultural heritage.

This visit not only spotlighted the grandeur of the Amerigo Vespucci but also transformed the Marina Bay Cruise Center into a lively Italian cultural hub. Known as Villaggio Italia, the space offered a blend of Italian art, cinema, and music. The Italian actress Serena Autieri drew a significant crowd with her second sold-out concert, while forums, film screenings, and art displays celebrated Italian culture against the picturesque backdrop of Marina Bay.

Speaking at the event's conclusion, Undersecretary of Defence Matteo Perego di Cremnago emphasised the Vespucci's function as a "cultural bridge," linking Italy's essence with the distinct beauty of each country visited. Dante Brandi, the Italian ambassador to Singapore, shared his sentiments, describing the ship as more than a maritime wonder but a "ambassador of Italy," reflecting an inventive and dialogue-capable Italy.

According to Gioacchino Alfano, president of Difesa Servizi, the Singapore stopover demonstrated Italy's tenacious spirit, symbolising a nation that extends beyond its borders and contributes to a global community.

After departing Singapore, the Vespucci set course for Belawan, Indonesia, followed by Phuket, Thailand. The Villaggio Italia experience is set to return in Mumbai, India, later this year, continuing its mission to foster cultural exchange. As the Vespucci nears its 94th anniversary, anticipation grows for an upcoming centennial celebration in 2030, promising to honour the ship’s legacy and the enduring connection between Italy and the world.
