Adjusting to a Tropical Climate

Published - 12 February 2018, Monday

When you decided to move to Singapore, you probably envisioned glamourous nights out and lovely walks around Marina Bay.

While you will have no issues making those dreams come true, you probably did not think about how oppressive Singaporean weather can be to the unsuspecting Westerner. Even if you love heat, you will need to prep yourself a little in order to get used to your new environment.

Avoid the Air Conditioning at Home

This might seem like your worst nightmare but don’t turn on the AC on at home when you have just moved to Singapore. If you don’t give your body the chance to adjust to the climate, it simply won’t. As tempting as it might be, try to stay away from air conditioning for as long as possible. You can use a fan to achieve airflow at home. There will be air conditioning in public places and in the office but try to keep it off at home – for now. To help keep you home nice and cool, close the windows and curtains.

Coping with the Heat Outdoors

If possible, avoid being outdoors between midday and 3pm. If you must go out, stay in the shade and don’t walk too fast. Wear comfortable loose clothing that is made from light and natural materials. Synthetic materials are more likely to make you warm so try to avoid wearing them. If you are keen on maintaining your fitness, you can look at joining an air-conditioned gym, swim laps or look for a running group that meets in the evening when the heat of the day has lessened a little and drink plenty of water.

Remain Hydrated

Singapore is very humid and that magnifies the effects of the heat. You’re likely to suffer from profuse sweating when you first arrive. Perspiration isn’t pleasant but it is your body’s way of cooling down. You will, of course, need to replace the liquid and salt expelled through your pores. Take a bottle of water everywhere you go. Add electrolytes to your water or try putting a bit more salt into your food. Avoid drinking alcohol during the day as that is one of the easiest ways to become dehydrated. Many people experience lethargy during intense heat so try taking vitamins or talk to your doctor if you’re struggling.

Go for a Swim

There is nothing quite as refreshing as going for a swim on a hot day. Most condominiums have swimming pools or you can sign up to a gym. If you have young children, take them to one of the many water parks in the city.

Remember that people are incredibly resilient and can usually adjust to the most adverse conditions. This won’t happen overnight and while everybody is different, with some people struggling for days or even weeks, your body will eventually acclimatise. You just need to give it time.

We chose Allied Pickfords as they were the only company we got quotes from to itemise their quote. Our furniture was the only lot in the container. They were great to talk to to organised the removal and they were understanding of our requirements. The boys they sent up were great too. Their logo is the "careful removers" it seems pretty spot on.
