Settling in to Your New Home

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

Now all the unpacking is complete, it is time to start enjoying your new location.

The dust has settled and you can move onto the next stage: enjoying your new home. You know you’re supposed to savour this moment, but sometimes things can be a little tougher than you anticipated.

It isn’t unusual for people to second-guess their decision to move to Singapore once the whole process is over. When everything is done and you don’t have to worry about the stress of relocating to a new country, it gives you a lot of time to think and perhaps fixate on insignificant things you would otherwise ignore.

Give It Time

Settling in will take time so you need to go at your own pace. Don’t expect to feel completely at home immediately, even if you were really excited about moving to Singapore. Your new location might be noisier or perhaps quieter than your last address. There may even be things that might bother you at first, which you will eventually start to accept as part of your new life.

Do What You Love

Think about the activities you enjoyed before moving to Singapore and find out where you can continue doing them. If you enjoy swimming and don’t have a pool at your residence, look for a sports centre or a public swimming pool. If you loved listening to live music or dancing, find the best spots to enjoy a night out. By following your hobbies, you will start to feel more comfortable appreciate learning about what’s on offer in your new environment.

Get To Know Your Surroundings

A walk around your new Singapore neighbourhood will allow you to locate shops and other sites that are important to you. Knowing where to run your errands will help you settle in more quickly. When in Rome! If you’re moving abroad, visit bakeries, restaurants and cafés that offer the local delicacies to help you uncover a whole menu of new favourites.

Meet Your Neighbours

Make an effort to introduce yourself to your neighbours. Getting to know the people who live near you can have a huge impact on how you perceive your local area. They will be full of useful information, such as where is the best place to get a haircut or what the recycling regulations are. If you already know a few people, you can throw a housewarming party to learn more about them and build stronger relationships.

Stay In The Loop

Read the local newspaper or join social groups, whereby you can gain information about what is going on in your newly adopted neighbourhood. Meet Singaporean locals and other expats by involving yourself in the local festivals or traditions. If you dedicate time to meeting new people while being friendly, it shows and people often appreciate the effort – hopefully returning the favour with a list of social invites in your inbox soon.
