Built-in 1956, the former Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market & Food Centre is a rare building. It is the only remaining market in Singapore built by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) and is one of the first such buildings to be built. In 2013, it was gazette for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). It has pre-cast curved concrete beams and above the second storey is its most striking feature a bold parabolic vaulted metal sheet roof on steel frames forming a majestic vaulted ceiling.
