Bodyworks Spa is one name that stands out in the busy health scene of Bali. In 1994, a strong-willed German woman who had made Bali her home since 1980, Regina Schulze-Boysen, started a business that would forever change the spa scene on the island. She opened Bodyworks, Bali's first day spa, with the bold goal of changing the way people rest and feel better.
Back then, beach massages were the most appealing thing, but Regina dared to think of a more luxurious way to get away. A place where luxury and peace went together perfectly, a place that spoke of peace and comfort. So, the first part began on Jl Raya Seminyak, a quaint place with a lot of personality.
It had a few massage rooms, one facial bed, and a few chairs in the spa. Star-shaped lamps above the bathtubs added a whimsical touch, and mosaic-glass mirrors gave the room a touch of grace. The colours of terrazzo moved around the room in a fun way. Here, in this cute cage, Bodyworks took its first breath.
There was no denying the appeal. Locals and people from all over the world were enchanted by the unique charm and excellent service. People told their friends, and soon the place was packed with people looking for a break. It was time to get bigger.
Regina's idea led to the opening of a second site in Petitenget, which was once a quiet place with fields and coconut groves. With the famous La Lucciola right next door, this refuge showed how Regina's travels had shaped her ideas. When Indian colour and Moroccan gardens came together, they made a place where colours danced and patterns told stories. A frangipani tree stood as a symbol of peace in a garden made of river stones. This safe place was our treasured home for 21 wonderful years.
Inside Bodyworks, services like the "mandi lulur" (an exfoliation massage) turned first-time customers into regulars. Even as Bali changed quickly and new competitors came along, Bodyworks kept its reputation as a well-known health brand.
In 2016, a new story began when the daughter, who had been influenced by the spa, joined the group. When she got back from studying abroad, she worked with her mother, Regina. So began a sweet partnership between mother and daughter that kept Bodyworks' tradition alive with zeal and joy.
Then came 2019, which was full of big changes. The end of the land lease meant that we might have to leave our favourite place, and the terms of extending it were not fair. It was hard to decide whether to leave the safe place or fight for the dream that was Bodyworks. It was decided to move forwards because of their hard work and deep love for their skill and team. With the help of builder Selin Maner, Bodyworks 3.0 took shape on a new piece of land.
The pandemic happened in the middle of the trip, so it wasn't a walk in the park. Still, in the midst of uncertainty, perseverance grew. And in December 2020, when the world was in the middle of a terrible crisis, the doors opened again. People in the country gave them a lot of help, which helped them not only stay alive but also grow until the international lines could be opened again.
Since then, almost three years have passed, and Bodyworks Spa still stands as a sign of dedication and hard work. With a grateful heart, they welcome you into their new refuge, which was made with love and care. It's not just a place for them to live; it's also a place for others who are looking for peace. Welcome, and I hope you find peace inside these walls.
Expat Choice says, to compliment their massages, an assortment of contemporary beauty treatments are available including hour-long facials, full epilation, manicures, pedicures and hair cream baths plus hair dressing and colouring. Bodyworks makes beauty in Bali easy. Come and see for yourself why readers keep returning.
