Kopi Thiam’ is back. Not as the friendly, local neighbourhood cafe but as a comic book.

Author/trainer James Suresh and former Straits Times cartoonist Adam Lee will launch the book at the Singapore Book Fair which gets underway on Friday 31 May at the Capitol Theatre and outdoor plaza and runs until Sunday 9 June 2019.

Popular as a comic series in Singapore’s New Paper and in The Star, Malaysia, ‘Kopi Thiam’ was created by Suresh and Lee 22 years ago.

While the creative pair have been busy with other aspects of their respective careers since, they recently got together and decided to bring 'Kopi Thiam' back to life in published comic book form.

Suresh explains: “On the spur of the moment, we decided that we should compile our old comic strips, update some of the stories and add new strips to reach a new audience who may not have heard about ‘Kopi Thiam’. So we’ve launched a new book that took more than twenty years to conceive!”

The co-creators of ‘Kopi Thiam’ will be on hand at the Singapore Book Fair at 5.30pm on 31 May to give a presentation about the evolution of the comic characters and the book. Lee will also demonstrate how he draws the characters and scenes.

Other books by James Suresh will also be on sale at the Fair. They include: “On a Street in Singapore’, ‘When I was in Uniform’ and ‘Singapore in the 60’s’.

‘Kopi Thiam’ is published by Training Plus International (Singapore) and distributed by Asiapac Books.

Singapore Book Fair (SBF), an annual event where publishers and book retailers gather, to be held in the heart of the Central District – Capitol, will continue to promote the joy of reading and make reading a part of our lives through books, lifestyle events, talks and many more.
