I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked in to Maguro Brothers, especially since it was housed in a mall and held top acclaim when it came to sashimi. This fare was usually served in an exclusive Japanese restaurant.
As in usual Japanese style I was welcomed with a greeting from staff through the restaurant, one that is music to my ears. You see I love Japanese food, the more exclusive the better.
My trips to Tokyo usually comprised an eating frenzy! A hunt for unique food, where my feet would most often take me back to Tsukiji Fish Market to enjoy unique cuts of sashimi at amazing prices. So when I heard about Maguro Brothers specialty bluefin tuna offering, my heart skipped a beat.
Misaki Megumi Suisan a wholesaler of maguro and sashimi in Japan is a name synonymous to fresh. Starting off as a fisheries port then an import-export company, he now has 20 restaurants around Japan and three in Singapore – 100AM, Suntec City and Gucco Tower. What does this mean for us, sashimi lovers?
That the freshest quality bluefin tuna at prices never to be seen before is on our doorstep. Directly imported from Japan, I enjoyed delicacies such as head toro, cheek, tuna ribs and dorsal sashimi which melted in my mouth. Be sure to rock up to the 100AM outlet as this is the only one that offers these rare parts.
Devouring these beautiful cuts of sashimi with wasabi and ginger, I was then served an amazing Maguro Hohoniku Nanban style (tuna karaage). If I wasn't informed that this was tuna, I would not have known as the texture matched chicken perfectly. Accompanied by house-made tartare sauce it was so good. I could have had the whole dish!
I was told that the next dish was Kyoto-style Maguro ribs Saikyo Yaki. Expecting beef, this too was tuna. Fried to perfection, best eaten with some rice and miso, this requires four days of preparation. What a stunner - no wonder it was so delicious and oozing flavor!
With many other dishes on the Maguro Brothers menu I could not believe my eyes – such fresh, high quality fish for a fraction of the price I was used to paying. Prices start from $62++ for a platter of 12 slices that feature 7 special cuts of Maguro. There are sets and a la carte too, plenty to choose from.
A truly special treat for sashimi connoisseurs!
