I had the pleasure of attending a dining event at the illustrious Alkaff Mansion in Singapore that had me stepping into a world of culinary delight and wine appreciation. The La Rioja Alta Wine Dinner celebrates one of Spain's most iconic wineries. Coincidentally, the evening was also the winery’s 133rd birthday, founded in 1890 by five families. Hosted by Guillermo de Aranzbal Bittren, the 6th generation of the family, it was an unforgettable gastronomic journey that showcased the best of Spanish wines and cuisine.
The evening commenced with a vertical tasting featuring 2004, 2001, and 1994 vintages of the Vina Ardanza wine from La Rioja Alta. Witnessing how the wines developed over time was fascinating as we tasted each glass. The 1994 and 2004 vintages shared similar exquisite characteristics, while the 2001 vintage revealed a bold and peppery flavour. 2001 is considered the best vintage for the region.
Following the tasting, we indulged in a sumptuous 4-course wine dinner at UNA, nestled on the second level of Alkaff Mansion. UNA pays homage to the rich heritage of Spanish gastronomy, offering an innovative and contemporary menu that beautifully combines authentic delicacies from different regions of Spain.
The dinner commenced with an amuse-bouche, the Salmorejo Con Huevo Y Jamo, a chilled tomato soup with a Serrano ham crisp and a quail egg. It was a delightful teaser of the culinary delights to come. The first course, Piquillos Bellenos de Bacalao, featured Atlantic cod stuffed into red peppers, finished with black olive dust that added a distinct flavour profile to the dish.
For me, the highlight dish of the evening was hands-down the Tuetano Asado Con Carrillera De Wagyu, a majestic bone marrow accompanied by tender Wagyu beef cheek, pearl onions, raisin gel, and a drizzle of Pedro Ximenez. Each bite was an explosion of flavours and texture - a true masterpiece. The main course, Portero Del Ojo Y Manchego Con PX, presented a beautifully-cooked MB4 rib eye with Manchego mash, PX caviar, and the best-tasting broccolini. For the sweet ending, a cheese service of Manchego and Idiazabel, accompanied by quince jelly, truffle honey, and muscats, brought the evening to a perfect close.
The wines that accompanied the dinner were exceptional. Lagar de Cervera Albarino 2021, a full-bodied white wine made from 100% Albarino grapes, provided a refreshing start to the evening. Torre de Ona Finca Martello Reserve 2016, a vibrant blend of 95% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo, and Garnacha grapes, showcased robust berry flavours with peppery notes.
The La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva 2015 stole the show with its elegant and refined character, bursting with berry and plum flavours. And then there was the La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 Seleccion Especial 2015, a medium-bodied masterpiece that showcased the winery's tradition and excellence. This was first produced in 1904, but subsequent vintages held on to the “1904” brand, confusing collectors. A simple solution sorted all that…drop the “1”, and the wine is forever branded as the “904”.
As I sat there, enjoying the fantastic wines and delectable dishes, I couldn't help but marvel at the exquisite setting of the Alkaff Mansion. Adorned with distinctive European-style architecture and perched atop the Telok Blangah Hill, it provided a quintessential backdrop for this extraordinary dining experience, and guests were treated to the finest service and ambience.

Exclusive back vintages, new labels, and curated wine events solidified the mansion's status as the sole ambassador of La Rioja Alta wines in Singapore. The partnership allowed guests to experience the finest Spanish wines in a unique and intimate setting. The newly introduced La Rioja Alta Tasting Room within the private wine cellar is a haven for wine enthusiasts, hosting exclusive tasting sessions, masterclasses, and intimate wine dinners.
