In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon Dr. Marco Faria Correa to discuss Aesthetic Breast Surgery.
According to Dr. Marco, the breasts, a symbol of motherhood, have been representing the image of fertility since the beginning of time.
Breasts have come to symbolize feminine beauty and sexuality too. It is no wonder Breast Plastic Surgery have become one of the most common plastic surgical operations to date.
This is not intended to be a sexist or derogatory comment to make in anyway - whatsoever, but in our discussion with Dr. Marco, I raised the question. What makes breasts beautiful?
Now, this subjective interpretation can vary according to a given culture, moment in time or race but Dr. Marco explained, what makes breasts beautiful comes down to breast definition.
As the age old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, although even what are perceived as beautiful breasts can eventually lose their shape, and firmness due to lactation, aging and over time, gravity.
Size is obviously one of the most important factors in breast attractiveness. The use of breast implants to augment breast volume and improve breast shape, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world.
So, how big is too big, and what is an optimal breast size? In terms of assessing whether an individual is attractive, the main factor is not absolute size, but rather several key ratios.
One crucial ratio is the projection of the lower part of the breast, and the ratio between the bust and the waist. Smaller breasts do not provide the visual cues for fertility and therefore may not trip the pleasure centers of the brain.
On the other hand, large breasts can also look crowded on the chest and connote obesity rather than fertility, and therefore may fail to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain.
Another crucial ratio is the breast shape – a major factor in breasts appearing attractive to the beholder. An attractive slope proves to also appeal to the pleasure centers of the brain.
It is fair to say the breast should not sag but should have a slightly pendulous under volume. The slope of the upper breast is either slightly convex, straight, or slightly concave.
Breast shape is becoming more popular with the prevalence of breast implants, which create fullness in the upper pole of the breast.
Depending on cultural values, for the women concerned, small breasts can be an emotional, social, or even sexual problem. For many of Dr. Marco’s clients, beast size is one of the most important attributes of femininity - and often size is missing.
Breast Augmentation can create beautiful breasts for women who are unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts. It´s a procedure that makes Dr. Marco’s clients feel more feminine and attractive, as it creates breasts that are uniquely sized to complement their frame and to enhance the silhouette of the body shape.
Breast Augmentation is the surgical enhancement of the breasts using implants. The implants are usually filled with silicone and are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures. Some are round, while others are teardrop shaped.
Breast Implant can either be used during a breast reconstructive surgery, following breast cancer surgery, to balance asymmetrical breasts, or to change the proportions of the body.
According to Dr. Marco Breast Augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts are fully developed. Successful Breast Augmentation depends on choosing implants that are the best fit for you.
An ideal candidate for Breast Implant is an emotionally mature woman, who understands her personal motivations and who has realistic goals for the results of the procedure.
If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation. Also, it is important to note, there is no scientific evidence that Breast Augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer.
Let us move onto Breast Reduction and Breast Lift. Sagging breasts developed when a woman loses a lot of weight or breast feeds several children, or after reaching menopause.
The skin loses its elasticity, and the glandular breast hangs down within its skin envelop. The reason for this is the temporary increase in breast volume that causes the skin to stretch.
The procedure is designed to elevate and reshape the breast providing a youthful appearance.
Breast Reduction involves the removal of excess fat, skin, and breast region. The procedure is generally done in an outpatient facility under general anesthesia.
Women that have serious health issues because of overly large breasts, often experience immense relief after having a breast reduction. This procedure makes the size of their breasts more proportionate and improves a client’s overall figure.
You are a good candidate for breast reduction if:
- Your breasts are heavy, hanging ad out of proportion with the rest of your body.
- You suffer from chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain due to the weight of your breasts.
- You are always passing up strapless dresses and blouses because they simply do not fit well.
As we age our breasts tend to lose volume and may even begin to sag. Women who are happy with the volume of breast tissue they have - but feel they have sagging breasts - would be an ideal fit for a breast lift, also known as Mastopexy. This procedure will not only lift your breasts, but also improve the shape.
A Breast Lift can be performed under general or local anesthesia. However, there are different techniques that can be used to carry out the procedure, and this will determine where the incisions are made. This should be discussed with your Plastic Surgeon in consultation before surgery, to determine the best option for you.
A Breast Reduction or Breast Lift surgery are performed to reduce the size of a patients’ breasts and to enhance the shape and create proportion in relation to the over body silhouette.
Overly large breasts are not only aesthetically unappealing, but more importantly - can represent a medical problem as patients with enormous breasts suffer from Chronic Back and Neck Pain.
Clearly, breast size and shape can affect a woman´s wellbeing, self-image, psyche, and lifestyle, although usually performed for younger women, the operation may be suitable for women of any age.
The effect of Breast Reduction and Breast Lifts are permanent and dramatic, but the breasts will continue to be subjected to the laws of gravity over the years to come. To maintain the results for many years, Dr. Marco Suggests avoiding yo-yo dieting, smoking, sunbathing and to consider wearing a support bra - if you are not already.
According to Dr. Marco it´s essential to assess case by case, to understand the unique needs and requirements of each woman, and to choose the indicated techniques that will help to achieve a natural and appropriate result, increasing the beauty and joviality of the breasts.
Consequently, the beauty, the elegance and the harmony of the body will help the woman´s confidence and self-esteem.
“We tailor our surgical plans and operations by considering the singularity and the needs of each woman,” shares Dr. Marco.
