In A Hotel Lobby, the second release by The Souls of Singapore (The Souls), will be available across all good music platforms on Friday 1 May. [Preview version]
Featuring Surath Godfrey on lead vocals, In A Hotel Lobby sees the band venturing into ballad mode and demonstrates the breadth of Surath’s vocal abilities, from melodic phrasing to full blown emoting.
Surath Godfrey has been living, working and performing in Singapore for over 16 years and has developed a strong following among local music patrons, appearing in clubs and pubs in a variety of bands around the city 3-4 nights every week (pre-Curcuit Breaker restrictions). According to Surath, In A Hotel Lobby is very much a Soul ballad with a strong Country influence.
"The South was segregated when all the great Soul singers, like Ray Charles and Otis Redding were starting up"
“As a kid growing up in Sri Lanka, my family would sing a lot of Country music together,” said Surath, “So there’s little wonder that I had an immediate connection with the song. I just love singing it.”
The Soul’s founder and In A Hotel Lobby songwriter Daniel Feiler believes Country music was a huge influence on the Soul music that emerged from the South (US) in the 1960’s.
“The South was segregated when all the great Soul singers, like Ray Charles and Otis Redding were starting up,” said Daniel, “and that meant when they listened to the radio, it was primarily Country music that was broadcast resulting in a pervasive influence on Soul, especially the Southern variety.”
Regardless of genre, In A Hotel Lobby is an attempt to take the listener on a journey through some very raw human emotional territory. As with debut single, Lift Your Eyes, In A Hotel Lobby was recorded at Snakeweed Studios (Kaki Bukit) in early February with studio guru Leonard Soosay at the desk.
In A Hotel Lobby will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and all other popular music platforms from midnight Friday 1 May 2020.
