We love travelling and exploring new places, but sometimes you don’t have to jet off abroad to enjoy fresh and exciting experiences.

Some of the best locations, activities, and entertainment happen to be found in or near Singapore. Here’s how you can have a holiday at home if you live in or close to this metropolis.

Relax on a beach

Beaches in Singapore

Seeking a tropical island getaway where you can laze on the beach beneath palm trees with a cocktail in your hand? If you live in Singapore, there’s no need to hop on a plane, as there are actually several beaches in the vicinity of the city that are ideal locations for both sunbathing and swimming.

Sentosa Island is the best option if you plan on swimming in the sea, as the waters are clearer and calmer here. Siloso Beach is by far the busiest, but it’s also the best spot for swimming as it boasts clear blue water. Alternatively, head to Tanjong Beach or Palawan Beach for a more relaxing experience away from the crowds.

Escape to the wilderness

Singapore may be a thriving urban centre, but nestled among the modern structures, you will find plenty of parks and nature reserves where you can take a welcome respite from the busy city streets. Chances are that you’ve already scaled the summit of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (Singapore’s highest peak) and admired the coastline at Labrador Nature Reserve. But have you visited wild and untouched Coney Island, an eco-park that opened to visitors in 2015?

Once you’ve ticked that one off your list, head to Sungei Buluh Wetland Reserve to spot flocks of birds and maybe even a crocodile, ascend into the treetops at the HSBC aerial walkway in Macritchie Reservoir Park, or hike The Green Corridor to leave the city far behind.

Dive into the deep blue sea

One of the best diving destinations in Malaysia, Tioman Island, is only a three- hour ferry trip away from the city, making it the ideal destination for a weekend away, or even a day trip if you set off early. There are numerous scuba diving centres scattered around the island, and plenty of scenic spots for snorkelling for the less adventurous. Several of the dive centres are run by locals who will take you deep into the depths admiring coral reefs as you descend further underwater to witness the more dramatic marine life.

Relax in a spa

Want to take a break without leaving the city? Book into one of Singapore’s many spas for a weekend retreat that will leave you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. There’s an abundance of choice available, boasting Turkish, Asian, Japanese, Swiss and Hawaiian themed treatments. Ikeda Spa Prestige offers onsen-style dip pools, whilst ESPA is home to the city’s first Turkish hammam. Whichever establishment you opt for, you’ll forget that you’re still in the middle of the city whilst you are soaking in mineral waters and enjoying a massage.

Whether you travel for business, to visit family or on holiday, insurance is usually the last aspect of a trip to consider before you jet off around the world.

But if you follow these top ten tips from Singapore's The Wise Traveller, you can get the best travel insurance and guarantee a safe and secure journey. To Where Are You Travelling?

Don't take it as read that your destination is covered, as some politically unstable countries are not included. If in doubt, double-check with your insurer that you are covered and be specific as to where you are flying. For instance, some insurers vary their definition of Europe: are you going to the European Union or a country on the European continental shelf?
