We love Koh Rang Yai for a quick and easy day trip, it is one of the most popular days out for my family and our friends, you can literally just decide that morning and go...plus at the moment, it’s like having your own personal island, you will most likely be the only people there!
To get there, simply go to Laem Hin Pier on the west coast of Phuket, its about 15-20 minutes north of Phuket Town, and jump on a longtail boat. You don’t need to book, there are always plenty available and they certainly appreciate the business right now.
It normally costs 1200-1500 baht for a return trip and each boat will take approximately 10 people plus bags/cool boxes. The journey is only about 15-20minutes and ....I love the longtail boats, they are a lot of fun, the kids really enjoy riding up front and just getting on a boat feels as though your going on an adventure.
The boat will drop you off on the main beach. Just up from there is normally a lovely restaurant with great food and cold beers - its a bit pricey for Thai food but that can be excused because of the location!
However, at the moment the restaurant is closed due to Covid, but that doesn't stop us, we always manage to borrow a few chairs and tables and take a couple of cool boxes with drinks and a picnic lunch. Perfect!
The island isn’t big, in fact the kids really enjoy running off and exploring, chasing a few chickens (sorry chickens) and climbing trees. The main beach is wonderfully shaded, again, with perfect tree climbing activities available for those who want to.
The sea is wonderful for cooling off, probably not the best if your looking for snorkelling sites as its a clear sandy stretch, but for activities, the beach is perfect for a game of bat and ball or cricket.
And did I mention, tree climbing....actually we normally lose the kids up the trees for the whole day, it’s fantastic and the best climbing sites are positioned within eyesight so you can keep an eye on them easily.
