Singapore is perfectly located to allow convenient and easy travel across South East Asia. Where else, except for Europe, can you find yourself spoilt for choice? A hour flight can take you to the beaches of Thailand or hidden caves in Indonesia. But if you’re bored with the obvious destinations, here are a handful of off-beat suggestions that you can add to your bucket list. Start planning now!
Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Angkor Wat is one of Asia’s most popular destinations and for good reason. But if you want to skip the crowds and still get to experience history, why not go to Yogyakarta? This tiny town in Java holds Hindu temples as well as a vibrant night market. The hotels are cheap and you can also hire a car to go down to UNESCO heritage site – the world’s largest Buddhist temple at Borobudur. Adventure seekers can explore the gigantic Jomblang caves too.
Sapa Valley, Vietnam
Escape the crowds and head to Vietnam’s ‘Rice Bowl’ – the Sapa Valley. Imagine rice terraces as far as the eye can see. Go for long walks through forests, trek through rivers and gawk at flower fields. The best way to experience Sapa is to book a homestay so that you can get to see how the locals live, as well.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam
Vietnam may be popular for the old town of Hoi An, the coffee-culture of Hanoi or the tunnels near Ho Chi Minh. But one destination that has remained under the tourist-radar (thankfully) are the pristine beaches of Phu Quoc. Lake Toba, Indonesia
Indonesia has many jewels hidden deep in its foliage. Nature-lovers will enjoy the North Sumatra region, resplendent with waterfalls, forests and highlands. The centerpiece though, is Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world. Quite a picture-perfect spot, if we may say so. For a dash of culture, head to Tonging fishing village where the local fishermen will catch your fish live and prepare it for you fresh.
Kelimantu, Indonesia
If hiking is up your alley, Mt.Kelimantu beckons. The hike itself is quite an experience, but what lies at the summit will hold you spell-bound. Your efforts will be awarded with three crater lakes each of a different colour. Blue, green and red, the lakes are said to change colours too. As you start your descent, you will come across yet another wonder, the majestic Murundao Waterfall.
