Busselton Jetty in Western Australia has undergone an enthralling change, becoming a submerged art museum brimming with life. See a breathtaking show - the brand new Underwater Sculpture Park- eight metres below the surface. This one-of-a-kind project includes 13 sculptures, each created by a great Western Australian artist. However, these pieces serve a function well beyond simply artistic expression. They serve as an artificial reef, expanding the environment that has thrived beneath the jetty since its erection in 1865.
The submerged pylons of Busselton Jetty, which were originally simple structures guiding port operations, have now become an unexpected sanctuary for marine life. Over time, a diverse ecology has emerged, teeming with marine invertebrates and providing a safe haven for over 300 species. The Underwater Sculpture Park and Artificial Reef Project advances conservation efforts.
By introducing these sculptures, the project encourages the formation of hard bottom ecosystems, which are uncommon in Geographe Bay, which is dominated by seagrass meadows. These new habitats resemble natural rock formations, providing extra havens for marine species and fostering biodiversity in the area.
Exploring this underwater art exhibition is an incredible experience. Snorkelers and scuba divers can admire the sculptures, which each represent a unique artistic expression. Glide past a poignant figure contemplating the ocean depths, or weave through an enchanting seascape installation. The sculptures not only provide a visual feast, but they also serve as catalysts for new marine life. As encrusting creatures and algae colonise their surfaces, the sculptures turn into brilliant miniature reefs teaming with colourful fish and interesting invertebrates.
A $4 Dive and Snorkel Pass is necessary to ensure safe and pleasurable exploration. This pass is easily bought online or at the Jetty's Interpretive Centre. Before diving in, guests must sign a waiver, which may be done online to save time. Waterproof maps of the Sculpture Park are available for purchase at the Interpretive Centre to help visitors traverse the underwater wonders.
The Busselton Jetty's Underwater Sculpture Park exemplifies art's ability to harmonise with nature. It's an invitation to discover what lies beneath the waters while also helping to preserve a beautiful marine ecosystem. This creative project revitalises the concept of underwater art, changing it into an effective tool for marine conservation. Busselton Jetty is no longer just a jetty; it's a thriving underwater art gallery and artificial reef, putting Western Australia at the forefront of ecological ingenuity.
