Published - 07 February 2018, Wednesday

Winner of over 20 major awards, the original West End and Broadway production of TIM RICE and ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’s iconic musical EVITA, directed by legendary Broadway director HAL PRINCE, will make its Asian premiere at The Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands this February as part of an international tour. Tickets are on sale via Sistic and Marina Bay Sands ticketing.

Evita

EVITA originally opened at the Prince Edward Theatre London in 1978 and ran for a record-breaking eight years. It won two Olivier Awards, and starred David Essex, Joss Ackland and a then unknown Elaine Paige. The show opened on Broadway in June 1979, starring Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, playing 1,567 performances and winning seven Tony Awards.

Evita

Set in Buenos Aires between 1934 and 1952, EVITA charts the rags-to-riches rise of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the “spiritual leader of the nation” by the Argentine people.

Evita

For decades, EVITA’s fairy-tale love story coupled with the tragic hand of fate, has thrilled theatre-lovers all over the world. The 1996 movie starring Madonna as Eva, Jonathan Pryce as Perón, and Antonio Banderas as Che Guevara went on to win an Oscar and three Golden Globes.

Evita

The finest ever pairing of Tim Rice’s lyrics and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music has created some of the best loved songs in musical theatre, including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, Oh What A Circus, You Must Love Me and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

Evita

Opening on 23rd February 2018 for a strictly limited season, this new international production stars EMMA KINGSTON (Les Miserables in London’s West End as well as UK productions of In the Heights, Fiddler on the Roof, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Grease), who was personally chosen by Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince to play Eva Perón.

Evita

Evita

The production reunites the original creative team of legendary Broadway director HAL PRINCE, the West End and Broadway choreographer LARRY FULLER and the original designer TIMOTHY O’BRIEN.

Hal Prince has won 21 Tony awards, more than any person in history. As well as EVITA, his directorial and producing credits include Candide, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Show Boat, A Little Night Music, Follies, Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof. Hal Prince said “I am absolutely thrilled to be directing this original production of EVITA. I believe that it is Tim and Andrew’s finest work and audiences in Singapore are truly in for a treat.”

Everyone should look forward to this awards-winning performance in Singapore by Tim Rice and the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber. The songs are such classics; even now I will still hum ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and “You Must Love Me” by Madonna whenever I am on my way to work. I had really loved the movie which showed Eva’s brief but exciting life, one that was not wasted and lived to the fullest.

So glad that they are coming here! With such a powerful cast (award winners in their own right), this will certainly be a stunning and moving performance for sure.

What I Iove about Singapore. Is that in my many years in Australia I was never able to get a ticket or it was too expensive, but here everything is on my door step. Never got to see Evita, now I get the chance!

Why do I love Evita the musical? Like many, I watched and fell in love with the movie version many years ago.
And at last, I'm beyond thrilled that it's coming to Singapore! I’m confident that everyone will absolutely enjoy it – myself included. I’m particularly excited to see Emma Kingston perform (in real life) – and especially in the role of Eva.
Of course, Andrew Lloyd Webber is pretty much a genius. As is Tim Rice - I mean, who DOESN'T love singing "Don't Cry for me Argentina" is the shower?! I bet the audience will be leaving the MasterCard Theatre at MBS singing…

Great article! I’m very excited that Evita is coming to Singapore. I’ve never see the play but I lived in Buenos Aires during the filming of the movie. I’d love to be the winner so that I can experience that gorgeous ALW music and imagine, to once again, be standing in front of the Casa Rosada.

I would very much love to see this musical! The well known and sell loved songs came from this musical. Having seen the movie a long time ago, I would be curious to see how well it followed or differed from the stage production. The cast who's coming to Singapore are also well experienced and have been in some very big productions which can only mean that they are expected to impress the audience. Also, coming from the Philippines, I remember how Imelda Marcos was always called the Evita Peron of the Philippines! I am fortunate to be in Singapore when this production will be presented and I should take this opportunity to see it. Definitely a production not to be missed.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a master at his creations! Evita is one of the classics that tell the tale of Argentinian history. Not forgetting the wonderful music. A good movie, and would definitely love to see it even better on stage!

In the words of Eva Perón: I want to tell the people of Argentina - I've decided I should decline all the honors and titles you've pressed me to take. For I'm contented - let me simply go on as the woman who brings her people to the heart of Perón. Don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I shall not leave you. Though it may get harder for you to see me, I'm Argentina, and always will be.
