If you thought Orchids were the only crops grown in Singapore, think again. In fact, farming was a widespread activity (especially along Orchard Road!) till 1987. Aside from local eggs, other produce like milk, vegetables, fruit and fish also have "made in Singapore" versions.
Here's where you can pick up some local produce:
Quan Fa Organic Centre - You can pick up their organically-grown veggies in Sheng Siong Supermarket, but why not make a trip down to the source
Green Circle Eco-Farms - How about a farm, which eschews chemicals such that even your perfume is banned (it might attract bees!)? Taking "natural" to a new level.
Oh! Farms - All kinds of crunchy greens including herbs here.
Got Milk? Or Goat Milk?
Hay Dairies is the only goat farm in Singapore with goats raised for milk. Why goats? The enterprising owner, Hay Yak Tang, switched over from pig farming as it was being phased out in Singapore.
Goats here are "free-range" and raised in large roomy barns and are fed with Alfafa Hay from the USA. Come before 10:30am and kids would be delighted by watching the milking sessions.
Health-wise, goat milk is reputed to be an alternative for the lactose-intolerant and is said to relieve conditions like eczema and phlegm.
One of the stops of the Kranji Countryside Express bus route, admission to Hay Dairies is free for groups of 20 or less.
Old MacDonald had a farm... in Kranji?
Sick of the convenience of air-conditioned supermarkets, keen t show the children where their food really comes from? A walk in the Kranji countryside yields hidden gems (or rather) local produce.
Most farms in land-scarce Singapore are located in far-out places. But those without their own wheels can visit Kranji farms by taking the Kranji Countryside Express bus from Kranji MRT station.
Notable farm stops include:
Bollywood Veggies - organic veggies and an onsite cafe by a couple with passion of Bollywood proportions! Farmers’ markets aare held throughout the year, check the website for details.
Jurong Frog Farm - because frog legs are low in fat!
Hay Dairies Goat Farm
For ornamental fish lovers, visit Max Koi Farm and Haussman Aquarium.
The bus also stops at nature attractions like the Kranji Marshes and the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserves.
