  • Explore Lim Tze Peng’s Masterpieces at National Gallery Singapore
  • Lim Tze Peng

The National Gallery Singapore will present the artistic legacy of Lim Tze Peng, Singapore's oldest living artist, in an exhibition called Becoming Lim Tze Peng. The show, which runs from late October 2024 to March 2025, allows visitors to discover over 50 masterpieces that track the evolution of this renowned 103-year-old artist. The exhibit, which includes works from the artist's personal archives as well as pieces from Singapore's public art collections, promises to bring to life nostalgic depictions of Singapore's ordinary life and vibrant global vistas.

Lim Tze Peng, known for his creative approach to Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, continues to push artistic limits even in his centenary year. Becoming Lim Tze Peng is the fourth installment of the National Gallery's SG Artist series, which honours visionary local artists that exemplify Singapore's creative spirit after independence. Lim's unique 'hu tu zi' (糊涂字) style, meaning'muddled calligraphy' or'muddled characters,' is central to this display. Lim created this unique art form, which is an expressive deviation from conventional Chinese calligraphy, with powerful brushstrokes and an abstracted interpretation of characters.

The exhibition spans decades, with works dating back as far as 1946, allowing art fans to see Lim's growing approach over time. The exhibit not only acknowledges Lim's contributions to the Singaporean art scene, but it also emphasises his commitment to expressing both the cultural essence of the country and the beauty of overseas destinations through his expressive and visionary artwork.

For those interested in delving deeper into Singapore’s rich artistic heritage, this exhibition serves as an unmissable experience, offering insights into Lim’s creative journey and his enduring influence on contemporary art. Visitors are encouraged to explore this captivating tribute to one of Singapore’s most iconic artists at National Gallery Singapore.
