This is a hip neighbourhood where many expats frequent on a Saturday morning for all their shopping needs.
Centrally located within the Tiong Bahru district known for its cafes, cool shopping options and Deco architecture.
This is not such a large market but is is impeccably presented and the produce is from all over the world including Australian and New Zealand beef and even cheeses.
The term wet market comes from the water used to wash the vegetables and the melting ice from the fish stalls. The wet market is a local institution. It's the place to go to find all your vegetables and dry goods, fish, pork, beef, almost any fresh produce you can imagine, and best of all the wet market prices are comparatively cheaper than a standard supermarket. Although at times due to seasonal changes to availability of produce, prices can escalate - so beware.
There are wet markets in almost all neighbourhoods around Singapore. Most of the HDB - Housing Development Board Estates will house a wet market, and a Hawker Centre ( food stalls) for inexpensive Malay, Chinese, Indian and other Asian dishes ranging from S$2.50 to S$10.
