RATED 8 / 8

Handmade tarts anyone? Made fresh daily at Wunderfolks cute store on Joo Chiat Road. I was excited when I stumbled across this outlet. Love tarts especially fine elegant ones. I liken these to ones I am accustomed to having in a fine dining restaurant. Gourmet filling with crunchy shells.

What began as a home-based business, saw demand amongst friends and family which helped fuel Wunderfolks to the next level. They knew they had found a niche with patrons who came back repeatedly for more. Today, a full-fledged business on the growth path, Wunderfolks has increased their repertoire of flavours.

Wunderfolks started by making larger 20cm tarts with six flavours. For $45 choose from mixed fruit, lemon, maple pecan, dark chocolate, lychee and black sesame. Customers who frequented the shopfront however, often requested mini tarts. That led to the birth of smaller 8cm tarts priced at $8 each or $42 for a pack of six.

A fantastic option if you are in charge of dessert for a dinner party. Stylish and elegant, the larger tarts can be split into two flavours - lemon and dark chocolate for example.

Dale, marketer and designer attends to front-end business while Vincent an avid baker, ensures the back-end kitchen runs to clockwork precision. They obviously know what they are doing as Wunderfolks saw business grow from online orders, shopfront takeaways and corporate events. Their tarts are perfect for festive celebrations too.

Since all tart shells  are made with tender loving care which takes time and effort, quantities are limited. Made with awesome ingredients, they are so crumbly and buttery.

Wunderfolks also launch special weekends where they bake four flavours in one tart. Not only does it look scrumptious with four different quarters, they are also a quirky, unique dessert to boast at a corporate event or any event really!

I cut into my first tart “Hey Sesame” – silky, creamy & luscious black sesame ganache very much an Asian flavor. The sesame flavor was not overpowering as it sometimes can be, in dominating the entire dish.

In fact the creamy ganache texture played a dominant role this time round with vanilla tones. Really delicious as a cool dessert that would cut any heavy meal that came before.

As I bit into the next tart “Lemony Meringue” – homemade tangy and zesty lemon curd with lightly toasted fluffy meringue, I noticed the crunchy shell texture against the soft curd that oozed out the side.

Elegant in taste and presentation I would liken it to a tart served in a fine dining restaurant. Wunderfolks crew have got it right in terms of timing, as specially crafted tarts have become the “in-thing”

Most of these tarts can be served chilled. In fact highly recommended that they are stored for a maximum of 3 days. I tried the “Fruitilicious Mixed Fruit” at breakfast.

This traditional tart has been around for a long time but is still a welcome change especially when seeking something light. According to Wunderfolks the “Lychee” tart is a hot favourite. Fruity flavours are often sought out after a big meal.

For me nothing beats the “Maple Pecan”, maple almond frangipane base is topped with roasted pecans. This is a tart that can be served warm with a scoop of ice-cream. Highly indulgent but what the heck!

Last but not least the highly acclaimed “Valrhona Dark Chocolate” with 70% Guanaja chocolate ganache is cased in a handmade dark cocoa shortcrust pastry.

I love any dessert with dark chocolate as the bittersweet end to a meal leaves me complete and wanting for nothing. Wunderfolks you’ve done wonders!
