Arisa Chang visits Momolato Gelato Café in Kampong Glam - What is her verdict?

On a few occasions I have come across cafes offering gelato/ice cream. A few years ago I clearly remember an incident where a mum walked into a cafe and asked about the ingredients used. Service attendant unfortunately was unsure.

The mother was desperate for a good quality, pure and honest ice cream for her child who had allergy issues. I‘m a mum of 2 young kids and I know how that feels when we can’t find good food options for our kids.

Momolato

It’s a shame Momolato did not exist then! I would have run over to recommend some of the amazing flavours that were on offer. Momolato gelato is not just any ordinary gelato. The flavours are exotic, with many diet boxes ticked from keto, sugar free, vegan, dairy free to plant-based options!  The best part is they taste amazing and pricing is reasonable. Chef Sharon puts her full passion in developing new flavours and uses only the freshest and best sustainable ingredients to make these beautiful gelato locally.

Nama Chocolate (Keto) is intense and rich in flavours, red watermelon soursop has an interesting refreshing taste (reminds me of guava), ondeh ondeh is a rich coconut delight with a Korean sweet potato surprise hidden in it, sea salt gula melaka is heaven for gula melaka lovers like me.

Momolato

Maoshanwang Durian is dairy free, as pure as it can, and they offer a sugar-free version, sugar-added version and a coconut gula Melaka version, depending on your preference. There are so many other interesting flavours I would have loved to try such as speculoos which was made with Lotus cinnamon biscuits, banana cookie crunch, black forest and many many more.

Another highlight was the croffle, the texture of croissant and waffle combination in one bite. My first time trying it and I’m already addicted!! Needless to say how well it goes with gelato. The popsicle spritzer I tried was coconut water lychee with coconut water lychee pop, it was super refreshing.

I highly recommend everyone to go visit this new amazing little gem on Haji Lane but if you don’t have time to go there, check out their website and get ready to order online, it’s too attempting after looking at the endless yummilicious flavours.

Come on down to Momolato if you want to know the gelato brand behind the brands. Founded by investment banker Sharon Tay, she has made great strides in creating exotic flavours, most of which I had never tried before.

Whatever diet you are on, there’s something for you. The Momolato gelato range serves a choice of keto, vegan, dairy-free and sugar-free (suitable for diabetics). Having put much thought into her creations, Sharon uses only the best natural ingredients minus the additives and artificial flavouring.

With flavours like Kochi Yuzu Shiso and Chocolate Arabica Coffee to Ondeh Ondeh Sweet Potato Swirl, Sharon has crafted more than 240 gelato and popsicle flavours. It is no wonder the Momolato range changes weekly!

I would highly recommend going down memory lane and donning the persona of your younger self, as you step into this naughty playland of gelatos. Of course my suggestion would be to start with a popsicle which is served on a stick in a glass.

Every bit of melted popsicle falls into the glass which can be had as a drink. I loved the coconut, water lychee pop which was so refreshing to the palette. Lovely on a hot sunny day if you need a re-charge!

Haji Lane is the perfect spot for Momolato as the tempting treats accompanied by tropical style décor is welcoming. It made me want to pop in, pick up a cone or grab a seat by the bar or table, and watch the world go by.

Having never tried a croffle – a blend of waffle and croissant, I felt this was the best chewy pastry I had ever had. Crisp on the outside with an aroma to die for, I will definitely be back for more. A dollop of gelato on a croffle and magic!

This is a must try. The combo of flavours and textures were an explosion in my mouth and so pleasing to my taste buds. Cold and warm, sweet and plain (croffles are made sugar-free and come in many options) this would be a dessert to head down for, wherever you are.

Priced reasonably too, the Momolato offerings are to be shared. Best eaten in a group of 4 that will enable a try of more flavours. Eating such a cheery dessert leads the way to lightheartedness and that is exactly what I experienced having visited Momolato. Laughter exuded the space.

Open till 2am this new gelateria is a perfect spot for Ramadan month as Muslims mill around for something sweet after breaking fast.

I was delighted at Sharon’s attention to detail where tableware is made from biodegradable leaves. This is a model for business owners to follow as we break new ground to make an impact in our own small ways.

It is no wonder Sharon clinched the Asia-Pacific title in 2015 and came up as the Press Choice against 35 finalists from 18 countries in 2016.

Having Momolato right on our doorstep is our good fortune.
