Destination enclave Nikoi Private Island invites guests to delve deeper into meaningful adventures and exploration with its line-up of multi-artist residency programmes at Ubah Rumah from April 2023 to early 2024.

Snugly nestled in the jungle on the north-west tip of Nikoi Private Island, the purpose-built studio and residence is an addition to the island’s ever-growing commitment to providing thoughtful barefoot luxury. Located just a stone’s throw from Singapore, 8 km off the east coast of Bintan, Indonesia, the island is home to 18 family-friendly rustic villas, alongside two restaurants and a plethora of land and sea activities for discerning travellers looking to retreat, relax and learn.

Ubah Rumah, which means ‘Home of Change,’ drew inspiration from the nomadic culture of the indigenous Orang Laut community and the maritime history of the region – both of which are relatively undocumented. The programme commenced in November 2022 and has seen multiple artists and researchers complete residencies since. Ubah Rumah provides an avenue for artists and researchers to develop their own projects, conduct interactive workshops with guests, engage with staff and visit local communities on Bintan to discover more about the local history and culture.

A vessel for knowledge and deeper analysis into artforms that embrace history and the environment, Ubah Rumah looks forward to welcoming global artists.

Singaporean artist, educator and researcher, Zarina Muhammad will be in residence from 25 June to 22 July 2023. Relying on her expertise on the re-examination of oral histories, ethnographic literature and histographic accounts of Southeast Asia, she welcomes guests to reach beyond themselves to experience history in depth through her multidisciplinary project, which includes installations and performances.

In August, Singapore-based artist Wendy Zhang also joins the foray with her educational insect-themed workshops. Journey with her as she unearths the importance of insects in an ecosystem through mediums such as vivid watercolour displays.

September draws more focus on the environment, with urbanist and strategist Sarah Mineko Ichioka. Leading a strategic consultancy for environmental, cultural, and social-impact initiatives, she follows the principle of Ubah Rumah from 17 to 23 September 2023, to raise awareness of local and international communities and ecosystems.

Marine researcher Dr Neo Mei Lin, award-winning multidisciplinary artist Gilles Massot and internationally exhibited artists Mintio and Kabul are all also anticipated residencies for later in 2024.
