As Singapore's beloved giant panda, Le Le, celebrates his second birthday, he prepares to say goodbye to the Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest exhibit at River Wonders on Monday 20 November, 2023. The imminent relocation is part of an important conservation endeavour for the Giant Panda species, contributing to China's Panda Conservation Programme.
Le Le, who has exhibited signs of growing independence, will enter a mandated quarantine on the same day as the farewell celebration before travelling for China in mid-December. The exhibit is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Jia Jia taking the limelight from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Mandai Wildlife Group, which has been entrusted with the care of Kai Kai and Jia Jia, will work closely with Chinese colleagues to safeguard the well-being of the remaining pandas and to plan for their future breeding cycles.
Notably, Le Le's behaviour, such as solo feeding, resting, and playing, has indicated his growing independence, mimicking the natural growth of Giant Pandas in the wild. To prepare for the impending separation, the Animal Care staff has been training Le Le since February 2023, preparing him for a new private den and introducing timesharing of the exhibit.
Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, Deputy CEO and Chief Life Sciences Officer of Mandai Wildlife Group, expressed thanks for the delight Le Le has offered to the nation and abroad visitors since his birth in 2021. Le Le's departure, considered as an important milestone, demonstrates Singapore's dedication to China's global network for Giant Panda conservation.
Vaccinations, health exams, and conditioning are all part of the preparations for Le Le's journey, with Mandai Wildlife Group and Chinese experts working together behind the scenes. The conservation efforts go beyond the physical movement, with the exchange of knowledge and research articles contributing to the larger conservation projects coordinated by the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA).
To commemorate Le Le's legacy, River Wonders is offering a 40% discount on the 1 Adult and 1 Child entrance bundle from October 6 to 31. Guests can relive Le Le's charming memories through photo points, drop off farewell fan mail, and even win an exclusive Le Le sticker sheet by dressing up in panda-inspired attire.
As Singapore bids farewell to Le Le, the collaboration between Mandai Wildlife Group and CWCA exemplifies the global dedication to Giant Panda conservation. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months as Le Le embarks on this transformative adventure, which will leave an everlasting impact on Singapore's conservation narrative.
