Alexandra Road History

Alexandra Road is a street connecting Pasir Panjang and River Valley Road.

The road was completed in 1864 and named after Queen Alexandra, consort of King-Emperor Edward VII.

After the 1950s, the area became the location for reputable businesses like Singapore Cold Storage, Anchor Brewery, Diethelm, Singapore Steam Laundry, the list goes on.

Alexandra Hospital originally named the British Military Hospital was built in the 1930s for use by military personnel. The beautiful tree-lined roads of Alexandra Park was one of the finest examples of a colonial residential park in Singapore.

Most of the buildings were erected during 1935 to 1940 by the Far East Land, Air and Sea Forces to accommodate military personnel. When the British withdrew from Singapore in 1971, the Singapore government took over the British Military Hospital, after presenting a token of S$1 note in a frame to Britain.

It was renamed Alexandra Hospital and on 15 September 1971, it was officially opened to the public. Alexandra Hospital is a 400-bed hospital located in the south-western part of Singapore. Nestled in a 110,000 square metres land, the hospital is lined with mostly colonial style buildings built since the late 1930s.
