Nanyang Tales Photography is a local photography studio deeply inspired by the sensational nostalgia of classical films and the world’s glorious heritage. Run by two young ladies Moni Yuan and Sylvia Zhao, Nanyang Tales Photography aims to regularly launch different premium theme photoshoots that are designed to honour its source of inspiration while enhancing the authentic beauty of their subjects with absolute femininity.
Established in Singapore, their signature “Nanyang Tales Collection” pays homage to the local Peranakan culture and is definitely a one-of-a-kind series that cannot be replicated by others. It transports you back to the mid-1900s with a true to history Peranakan makeover and photoshoot, that can definitely pass off as a press image for local drama series “The Little Nyonya”.
According to its co-founder Sylvia Zhao, their appreciation for the Peranakan culture was ignited after working with a cultural insider. Together, they explored the Peranakan culture through making a film that showcases the creation of batik prints, embroidered costumes and colourful ceramics. The film is targeted to educate Chinese audience in China about Singapore’s unique Peranakan history.
The heritage enthusiast duo then took a step further to launch the exclusive “Little Nyonya” theme photoshoot as part of their effort to promote the understated beauty of this local culture. Sylvia also says, “They always look up to classics for inspiration and motivation. In this case, the duo incorporated the use of moody lightings and highly-contrasted colours (especially green and yellow) to arouse the sense of nostalgia and longing as a tribute to Hong Kongs renowned film maker Wong Kar-Wai.”
A modern vintage version of “Little Nyonya” is thus born, and available for any individual to experience via a personal, exclusive and professional makeover. Hairstyling, makeup and costumes will be provided, follows by a 1.5hrs photoshoot.
