Life Bags For Phuket

Hard hitting video from Chris Parker (Retired Working For You) who joined the efforts of 5 Star Marine and One Phuket in their essential life bag donation work in and around Phuket. Video Credit: Retired Working For You

In Chris' own words: "What 5 Star Marine in Phuket, Thailand have done during the past 14 months is nothing short of unbelievable. This video will tell the story about how, when the pandemic struck, one man decided to begin helping those in need on his home island and as the need grew, so did the effort.

Life Bags

Today, One Phuket has handed out more than 210,000 'Life Bags' with daily essentials for a local family who have no income. On Phuket, where tourism is basically everything, this has provided a lifeline and gotten many through this challenging year.

The news in Bangkok and Thailand has been mostly bad this past year, but the Phuket Sandbox is reopening travel and bringing hope to the locals who are looking to get back on their feet. So book a ticket and be a hero!"

We need your understanding

It’s intense right now, and with Covid numbers consistently high, the need for life bags is never ending. We have a lot of people in our community reaching out, asking how they can help, but for people like Shaun Stenning, that means he’s overwhelmed not only with calls from people needing help, he’s also overwhelmed with calls from people wanting to help.

We really appreciate the outpouring of support, but we need your understanding that for those on the ground, working 24x7, they just can’t take the calls or answer the messages. There are just too many of them.

When it comes to wanting to help, the most important thing to understand is, due to the Covid situation in Phuket, we cannot have people packing or distributing life bags. We will notify you when this changes.

This, of course, makes the work that much harder for the small team doing it, but we have to protect our community and make sure we’re not adding to the spread.

We know people want to help. But there are many ways you can contribute and by helping us succeed as a community, we can achieve more. When we established One Phuket, it was to bring everyone together, so we weren’t missing anyone. That is core to our mission – to do this together.

THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

  • Donate funds to help us buy life bags. We expect the next two months to be the time of greatest need, so your generosity is appreciated. Anything you can donate is welcome and it shows those working to exhaustion every day that they are valued and appreciated. Every cent donated goes to life bags
  • When you shop at Villa Market, please buy items for One Phuket and put them in the trolleys at the front of the super market. If you don’t know what to do, look for the green One Phuket signs, or speak with the staff. When the trolleys are full, our team collects and moves it to the packing zone
  • Shop at the other supermarkets, or even better, the mum and pop shops for rice, oil, eggs, sugar, soap, tins of fish, maggi sauce, noodles (no beef or pork please), toothpaste, toothbrushes, and anything else you think people need. Leave these donations at the room under the Clock Tower at Blue Tree. They will be moved to the packing zone
  • We will share the schedule for Jack of SOS https://www.scholarsofsustenance.org/sos-thailand who is delivering cooked meals all over the island. You can cook food to donate to Jack, or pay a local restaurant to cook meals which Jack can pick up – helping a local business too. We need to respect that Jack can’t spend all of his time collecting small amounts of food, so we’re working to make this more efficient. Another great way to contribute to our community is book your local driver to deliver your food to Jack, so you help them earn an income too
  • Share the work One Phuket is doing to raise awareness and so we can build more support for this work. This is a HUGE help to us

TEAM WHAT HAVE I MISSED?

Please, if you need to speak to someone, do not call Shaun Stenning. Not now. He just can't take it all on. However, also understand that all of us are overwhelmed with messages, so for the other admins on this page, reach out to any of us. The core group is tagged in this post.

However, the challenge is we don’t always see these messages if we are not friends. So keep trying, keep messaging (and keep your cool if we don’t respond, we’re all struggling to keep up), but the best chance is leaving a comment on a public post. We can all see that and respond to it – potentially taking it to a private conversation.

It’s an intense time. We’re all working really hard to keep things moving forward, but we do need your understanding and your kindness too.

I hope this all makes sense. We keep going, an Island United, we are #OnePhuket #SupportLocal https://www.thephuketnews.com/phuket-marks-61-new-covid...

The work that is going on across Phuket sets am example for communities across Asia and across the globe. #OnePhuket has been the brainchild of a local Expat #AndreaEdwards who has empowered local business, and individuals to all become one in the mission to feed Phuket. With every dollar comes life bags for locals in need. Thanks for the post and we are keen to help by posting and sharing your updates across the #ExpatChoice Network.
