If your grandchildren come to you often, and you are just crazy about them and agree to see them at home every weekend, you should think about having free space for sleeping and active games. After all, grandparents should rest too!
The interior of the children's room located in the apartment of the grandparents should be, first of all, universal. After all, grandchildren and granddaughters are growing rapidly, and it is unlikely that anyone would like to constantly make repairs and rearrangements in the room. That is why the guest room for children should be such that adults as well can spend time in it.
In this article, we will show you some ideas for the perfect children's room, in which all children, without exception, will want to stay - not just for the night, but for the whole weekend or summer break.
1. Choose the right room.
When planning renovations in an apartment with several rooms, it can be difficult to choose a guest room, even for grandchildren. The rules here are pretty simple:
- the room should be bright enough. But if you live in a region with a hot climate, give preference to a room that is not exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day;
- the room should be "quiet": take into account the location of noisy neighbours, noisy rooms in the apartment (bathroom, toilet, kitchen with a washing machine, etc.); naturally, it is desirable that the windows of the room do not face a noisy highway.
Of course, it is practically impossible to take into account all the recommendations in one room: choose the best option.
2. Wall decoration.
Everything is quite simple here: choose between wallpaper and wall painting, or combine these two finishes.
Painting the walls is the most practical option. Especially if your grandchildren are prone to "wall art". Choose durable paints that are washable and, of course, high-quality, odourless. The walls will have to be carefully prepared for painting: align, plaster. Additionally, it will not be superfluous to paste over the walls with a smooth paint interlining: it will not hide the unevenness of the walls, but it will help prevent the appearance of small cracks.
When choosing a colour scheme, do not forget that it is not you, but the grandchildren who will stay in that room It is better to make walls in neutral or light shades: if you really like, for example, bright green and orange colours, it is better to add them in the form of decor and textiles.
A common option for wall decoration: a combination of wallpaper with different patterns, or a combination of colours and wallpaper. One wall in the room can be distinguished: choose a brighter colour, or decorate the wall with photo wallpaper, painting, and decorative stickers.
3. Ceilings.
The ceilings can be any: from plasterboard, stretch, simply painted. Whatever you choose, it is better to give preference to solutions that are calm in shape and colour. It is not necessary to create complex, bright, multi-level compositions on the ceiling, especially if the children will not only play in the room but also sleep. Remember, children grow up very quickly. Will a sun-shaped ceiling in a teen's room be relevant? To maintain the theme of the children's room, it will be enough to choose the appropriate lighting: now you can buy lamps in the form of anything, from the moon and flowers to aeroplanes and motorcycles.
And one more important point: if you plan to instal a sports complex in a room, check the mounting method in advance, keep in mind that most of them are installed with a gap between the floor and the ceiling. In this case, tension streams or plasterboard structures in the area of the sport complex installation will not work for you.
4. Floors and doors.
The best solution for a guest room is a cork floor. Its main advantages: cork floors are warm, unlike laminate or linoleum; they are a little springy, which means they are safer if you have a small grandchild that can fall; it is an environmentally friendly material that is harmless to the health of the children.
It is better to choose the door that is “plain”, without glass inserts. Even if these inserts are made of super durable triplex, it is still not worth the risk. In addition, a one-piece canvas will provide better sound insulation. For the same reason, it is better to choose a solid wood door. Then you can calmly do household chores and even vacuum while your grandchildren's sleep.
5. The climate in the children's room.
Regardless of the region in which you live, if you have the financial opportunity, it will not be superfluous to instal an air conditioner in the grandchildren's room. Or at least make preparatory work in advance for the installation of equipment in the future. Thanks to the air conditioner, you will be able to create the optimal temperature in the room and purify the air, which is very important for the child's health. Even if you live in a region with a cold climate, air conditioning will be useful, since it can be problematic to ventilate a room in severe frosts. The air conditioner must be positioned so that the direct air flow is not directed towards the bed.
6. Lighting.
Correct lighting is very important! Insufficient or too bright light can be a real problem. Several lighting levels need to be considered:
- main light: its function can be performed by pendant lamps, built-in lamps and their combinations. It will be convenient to use a dimmer to adjust the brightness of the lighting. Remember that different types of bulbs (halogen, LED) require different dimmers. In order to calculate the optimal number of bulbs in the room, use a simple rule: 15 watts per square meter (equivalent to the power of incandescent lamps);
- additional lighting of the playing area and reading area;
It is better to place the switches in the children's room at a level convenient for the child, usually about 1 meter from the floor - this height will be comfortable for both you and your child.
Don't forget about natural light. It is important that the room has a large window from which sunlight can reach. Be sure to put double blinds on the window that will protect your grandchildren during the period when the sun's rays are strongest.
7. Security.
Key points to take care of for safety:
- when installing double-glazed windows, choose handles with a special child lock. Even if windows are already installed in the room, the handles can be replaced;
- choose sockets with safety curtains for the children's room: this is an easy way to protect your grandchild from dangerous experiments with electricity;
- it is desirable that in the children's room there were as few electrical appliances, extension cords, wires as possible. It is useful to think over the planning solution of the room in advance and choose such an arrangement of the sockets so that the baby cannot get close to the wires.
8. Creative area for grandchildren.
It is important that the creative area is comfortable for the child. Choose a table that suits your grandchild's height, a comfortable chair, and place shelving or open shelves next to the table to accommodate materials for creativity. Pencils, markers, details of puzzles and constructors, etc. It is convenient to store small things in baskets or buckets that hang on ordinary kitchen rails.
Make a magnetic marker wall in the room: to do this, you can simply paint part of the wall with magnetic, and then with slate paints. On such a wall it will be possible to draw with crayons, and if you use magnets to fix a sheet of paper on the wall, you will get an excellent easel. On the same wall, it will be possible to organise exhibitions of your joint works.
Take care of good lighting in the creative area too!
9. Decorations
Of course, a grandchildren's room simply has to be bright and beautiful! And yet, our advice is to give preference to neutral walls and furniture, but let the decor and textiles be bright and unusual. Then, over time, it will be possible to easily and at minimal cost change the theme, style, colour scheme of the room.
The most popular and fashionable techniques in decorating for children today:
- the use of bright thematic posters and interior stickers to decorate furniture and walls;
- unusual shelves, which themselves are an art object;
- original textiles, such as pillows in the form of clouds, stars, crowns, and mountains;
- children's tents and wigwams are one of the most fashionable trends in decoration.
Conclusion
We hope these tips will be useful to those who are already in the process, or are just planning to start repairs in the most important room of the house - the guest room for grandchildren. We believe that they will be overjoyed and that they will often spend time in it. May that room always be filled with laughter and joy.
