How to Have Fun in Singapore Without Spending Your Savings

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

Singapore is known for its magnificent shopping malls, stylish boutiques laced with high-end paraphernalia and fine dining.

Yet, you don’t have to spend your savings to have fun in this vibrant city. There are many activities you can enjoy on a budget. After all, money can’t buy happiness so having a good time doesn’t necessarily depend on how much money you spend.

Walk the City

One of the best ways to explore the thriving city is on foot. Singapore is clean, safe and orderly: the perfect combination to enjoy a stroll around its neighbourhoods. Don some comfortable shoes and start exploring the city.

Go to Chinatown and stop by the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum for some fascinating history and cultural interests, including regular blessing ceremonies. While you’re in Chinatown, stop for lunch at the Maxwell Food Centre – famous for its Tian Tian Chicken Rice, which shouldn’t be missed. Here you will find superb traditional dishes at the many budget-friendly hawker stalls. Little India is another neighbourhood that is worth a visit. This area of Singapore is bustling with activity during the weekend, which provides the perfect time to explore and visit the temples.

These neighbourhoods, along with the rest of Singapore, always have something going on so make sure to check when festivals are taking place to enjoy the celebrations. Visitors can go along and get involved without spending any money.

Eat Like the Locals

Singapore is a foodie paradise thanks to its great restaurants but the hawker centres offer equally delicious options. While you won’t need to spend much, you can find delicacies from China, Malaysia and India. It pays to join the longest queues as this is a great indication of the quality of food being served; Singaporeans love their food and don’t mind waiting for it. Your patience will be rewarded with amazing delicacies.

Visit the Local Free Attractions

Singapore has plenty of places you can visit that are completely free. This includes many temples as well as some landmarks. Gardens by the Bay is an enormous nature park in Singapore and this iconic location doesn’t cost anything to visit. Stunning during the day and night, the gardens offer many attractions that are free of charge, including the Supertree Grove, Sun Pavillion, Heritage Gardens, World of Plants and the Dragonfly and Kingfisher Lakes. If you want to visit the conservatories, you will have to pay a fee but SG residents are eligible for a discount.

Marina Bay is another city landmark you can’t visit Singapore without seeing and features the symbol of Singapore, a large Merlion statue. At night, the city skyline comes to life, beautifully lit with myriad colours and you can enjoy the evening water display.

If you would like to do something out of the ordinary, visit Haw Par Villa theme park. This park, also known as Tiger Balm Gardens, is littered with more than 1000 colourful statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese mythology and folklore that include some fascinating local legends.
