What You Should Do Before Admission Into a Singapore Hospital

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

If you’re on a private healthcare plan in Singapore, whether through your work or independently, there are standard protocols you should follow before admission into hospital for your scheduled procedure.

Since each insurer may have a slightly different pre-admission policy, we recommend reviewing your summary of benefits prior to admission.

Below, we’ve summarised the top 3 steps required for most patients prior to surgery:

1.  Identify the costs of medical treatment recommended by your doctor and the hospital’s ward charges. The hospital (or your specialist) should be able to provide you with an estimate of the final bill.

2.  Understand which ward class you are entitled to stay in under your health insurance plan and how much of the costs your health insurance policy will cover.

3.  Request a letter of guarantee (LOG) from your insurer. The LOG will assure the hospital of payment by the insurer so you’re not personally required to pay the full bill upon discharge. It’s important to know that each policy will vary depending on your chosen excesses and deductibles, so be aware of any costs you might be required to pay upon discharge. Some policies’ LOG cover the full cost of surgery, while some only cover up to a certain dollar value (for example, $10,000) and you would be required to pay the balance prior to leaving the hospital. You would then submit a claim for refund of the balance you paid.

As an Expat Insurance client, we will source your Letter of Guarantee from the insurer, ensuring all your details are accurate prior to admission. We also ensure all our clients understand their policy and are aware of what is (and is not) covered by their chosen policy. As Singapore’s leading insurance broker, our mission is to understand your needs and carefully curate healthcare policies to suit your lifestyle, budget and requirements.
