How to Build Your Immunity Through Nutrition

The Lacking Nutrient compromising your immunity

Sometimes it’s the small things that can make big differences. I recently spoke about this often overlooked nutrient deficiency as I see it regularly in my clients and was always a victim until I got used to the signs. So many nutrients to remember hey? However, this one is made by the body and therefore easily falls foul of poor lifestyle choices.

Vitamin D is not just a nutrient but a hormone. It regulates not just how we feel but also our immunity.

What are the signs of vitamin D deficiency?

A few, but commonly weak bones, low mood, lacking energy and most of all low immunity. Falling sick often? Feel revitalised by a day on the beach? Yep, all signs from a possible vitamin D deficiency.

So why are so many low in Vitamin D & what can we do?

Firstly, our modern lifestyle has moved towards being based indoor. Either trapped in our office jobs, avoiding the sun by excess sun block or even where we live. I.e places like Canada & North US, where there is less sunlight.

Vitamin D is best absorbed through direct sunlight. Of course, we need to be careful of exposure to harmful UV rays (especially if we have fair skin) but there needs to be a balance where we are exposed to at least 20 -30 minutes of sunlight daily

Secondly, our nutrient choices are not helpful. As its difficult for us to absorb enough through our food. It can be helpful to get a good dose of wild fish, e.g wild salmon or wild cod to improve our exposure.

Lastly, although all these will make a good difference, most of us need to take supplements. A high quality vitamin supplement can provide the 2000-5000 IUs needed daily. Ensure to supplement with ‘good fats’ such as avocado or fish oil as this a fat-soluble nutrient.

Incorporating these steps will ensure your immunity is not being compromised.
