Train as you travel
We all know consistency is key when it comes to hitting our fitness goals. For those who travel frequently for business, sticking to a structured routine is easier said than done, and training progress often suffers as a result. Couple this with jet lag, tempting exotic treats and the logistical challenges of navigating a foreign city, and it’s little wonder that our hard work in the gym can be undone so quickly in just a few short days abroad.
The good news is that ExpatChoice.Asia has found a solution! WorldTrainer, designed to help frequent travelers train consistently, helps connect clients with trainers at their travel destinations, so clients can keep on track with their training program while they’re away. With a global network of elite trainers in more than 50 cities around the world working together seamlessly to help you stay on target, WorldTrainer is the ultimate solution for all nomadic fitness enthusiasts.
So we set out to ask a few important questions and to dig a bit deeper, such as...What can you expect from WorldTrainer? How does it all work? And will it really help clients make better progress? We sat down for a chat with personal trainer Aaron Jones and his client and avid WorldTrainer user Lance Little to get the lowdown:
The Challenge
Lance (L): I started training with Aaron early 2016 and have been seeing great progress. After just one month training consistently three times a week, I saw myself getting stronger and leaner. I am generally trying to stay at a reasonable level of general fitness. Currently I’m working towards increasing my weight with lean muscle and reducing my body fat. I’ve been seeing great progress with Aaron. My challenge is to keep that up with my busy traveling schedule.
Aaron (A): The biggest challenge my clients face on a weekly basis is trying to find the healthy balance between work and training. A lot of my clients travel very frequently for business, which is disruptive for their training routines and often forces them to take backwards steps in their fitness programmes.
The Solution
L: For me, the right balance is to train with a PT (personal trainer) three times a week. With WorldTrainer, I can maintain that frequency regardless of whether I am at home or travelling. I am "time poor" when I am on business trips, so the fact that WorldTrainer sends a top quality trainer to meet me at the hotel gym is perfect. I can now maintain my training frequency, and also get the added benefit of having the intensity and quality gym time that only comes from working with a PT. Also, making the commitment to meet with a trainer ensures that I actually do get my workout done.
A: Consistent training helps my clients maintain all the hard work they’ve done locally, and prevents them from regressing while they’re away. I have been fortunate enough to experience the WorldTrainer system first hand. I train Lance very regularly, and I know he travels an awful lot with work. Back in January last year we teamed up with WorldTrainer to come up with a solution that fits around his lifestyle, and he’s made a lot of great progress since then - even with all of his three-week-long trips!
The Process
L: I think a lot of that is due to how easy the system is to use. I have the website on my phone and computer, and within a minute I can request a training. I log into the website and book my sessions for the week based on my schedule. WorldTrainer sends me a confirmation email and then matches me with a trainer who specialises in the type of training I have requested. I can even specify exactly what I want to work on in each session. This enables me to stay aligned with Aaron's focus and keeps our routine continuous. I meet the trainer in the hotel lobby and we have the session in the hotel gym.
I really like the chat function, whereby I can contact the trainer in case I am a few minutes late. Once we’ve trained, I can rate the trainer, and then I wait for confirmation that the workout routine has been entered into the system. This is very important to me because it gives me the confidence that Aaron is now up to date with my training progress, and I also like the fact that I have a record of all my workouts from around the world and can refer back to them at a later date.
A: To clarify, behind the scenes, WorldTrainer connects the ‘away’ trainers with the ‘home’ trainers, so I receive my clients’ training sessions overseas and get a good understanding of what progress they’ve made. This aspect is particularly helpful!
L: Before using WorldTrainer, it was very difficult to maintain my gains whilst travelling. Despite training in the hotel gym on my own, I could not maintain the intensity and form corrections that I would get when working with Aaron. When I returned to Singapore I had “gone backwards”, and in some cases I would lose up to 2 kg in muscle mass and increase my percentage body fat after only 10 days away. This was extremely frustrating not only from the physical perspective, but also financially, as it felt like the money I was spending on training was being wasted.
Since using WorldTrainer, I can maintain my usual routine of training even when I’m away from home. I’ve been able to continue to move towards my goals, and this consistency means that I achieve them much sooner than I would otherwise. People are now commenting on how much fitter I am, and the regular training keeps my energy levels high.
