  • Early Detection Saves Lives in Singapore’s Fight Against Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers in Singapore, ranking as the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among both men and women. To combat this pressing health concern, the 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS) has relaunched its #My1stColonoscopy free screening campaign in partnership with Icon Cancer Centre. Now in its fourth year, the initiative aims to provide lower-income individuals between the ages of 45 and 70 with seamless access to life-saving colonoscopies, running until April 2025.

Colorectal cancer, which originates in the large intestine, is often a silent disease in its early stages, showing little to no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they may include rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fatigue. Due to its asymptomatic nature, regular screenings play a crucial role in early detection, allowing doctors to identify and remove pre-cancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. With early diagnosis, survival rates can exceed 70%, significantly improving the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Since its launch in 2022, #My1stColonoscopy has sought to remove financial barriers that often prevent at-risk individuals from undergoing screening. Andrew Soh, Assistant Director for Fundraising, Marketing, and Volunteer Management at 365CPS, highlighted the importance of early detection, stating that timely diagnosis can be life-changing. By ensuring that screenings are accessible to lower-income individuals, the campaign empowers more people to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.

Beyond screening, proper nutrition is another key factor in preventing and managing colorectal cancer. Jocelyn Fong, Senior Dietitian at 365CPS, emphasised the role of a balanced diet in maintaining overall health. A diet rich in fibre, fruits, and vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer and enhance the immune system for those undergoing treatment.

The success of #My1stColonoscopy is made possible through the collaboration of 365CPS, Icon Cancer Centre, community groups, medical professionals, and social service agencies. By working together, these organisations can identify and encourage eligible individuals to undergo the sponsored screening, ultimately reducing the impact of colorectal cancer in Singapore.

Eligible individuals who wish to register for the free screening can do so through 365CPS community partners or directly via the 365CPS website. The screening is open to those aged 45 to 70 who hold a valid blue or orange CHAS card or a Public Assistance (PA) card and have not had a colonoscopy in the last five years.

Members of the public can also support this life-saving initiative by making a donation. Contributions help fund essential aspects of the colonoscopy process, from bowel preparation to consultation and medical procedures. Donations of any amount are welcome, with contributions qualifying for 250% tax relief. Excess funds will be directed towards supporting the broader mission of 365CPS in cancer prevention.
