5 Minutes with Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Alan Cheung

In a series of wellness spotlights highlighting the work of Singapore Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Alan Cheung, Expat Choice was delighted to catch up with the man who has helped hundreds of expats in Singapore and global locals who have experienced Sports injury, Joint pain, Trauma from Broken Bones and Musculoskeletal disorders.

A keen athlete, Dr. Alan Cheung Orthopaedic Surgeon and Director at International Orthopaedic Clinic trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts.

Says Dr Cheung, “As a sportsman who has played a variety of sports and recovered from bilateral shoulder dislocations, and various knee and ankle injuries, I can understand where my patients are coming from. This helps me empathise and build trust, and I can discuss injury management and recovery in an intelligent way.”

He regularly competes in BJJ and has won gold in tournaments in Singapore and Japan. When he’s not practicing martial arts, Dr Cheung enjoys golf, cycling and skiing.

From his experiences training and working in England, Australia and Singapore, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Cheung believes communication and empathy is vital for patients no matter what their background. He takes pride in understanding patient’s needs, providing realistic expectations and practical solutions for problems including knee, hip, rotator cuff while practising modern robotic Surgery techniques when required.

Taking his interest in sports and profession as an orthopaedic surgeon to the next level, Dr Cheung is also the first American College of Sports Medicine-Certified Ringside Doctor in Southeast Asia, and actively provides medical coverage for numerous international sporting events.

In particular, Dr Cheung is the Team Doctor for the Singapore Cycling and Wrestling Federations, and was previously the Singapore Medical Lead for One Championship and One Warrior Series mixed martial arts events. He was also the matchday doctor for the Singapore HSBC Rugby Sevens and SuperRugby events held at the National Stadium.

Dr Alan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the treatment of sports injuries such as torn ligaments and tendons, fractures and sprains, cartilage injuries, and even bone cancer.

He is skilled in minimally invasive joint reconstruction and the use of advanced robotic surgery - Makoplasty, Navio and Robodoc, for better surgical outcomes and reduced downtime.
