Whatever name you may know this peanut pancake by - Ban Jian Kueh (Hokkien); Min Jiang Kueh (Mandarin); Dai Gau Min (Cantonese) - this old-school breakfast food or quick snack is a favourite of many.
It is usually made on a large griddle. This local delight is commonly found in hawker centres, and are commonly enjoyed in three flavours – peanut (original), red bean and coconut.
If you are looking for a good stall to try this delicious snack, Granny’s Pancake is one of the more reputable stall, especially for their peanut butter flavour !!!
Granny’s Pancake started over 10 years ago as a humble stall in Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre and has since expanded to 10 franchises all over the island.
Despite the changing times, the menu remains simple and super affordable. It has only 4 items in its menu. To its credit, it has chosen to remain old school and all the outlets are in Hawker centres. The pancakes are simple and tasty and remains pretty consistent across all its outlets.
Of course everyone have their own preference as to what makes for the perfect Min Jiang Kueh. Granny’s Min Jiang Kueh is perfect for those who don’t like overly thick ones, especially those who don’t fancy too much batter.
Despite being thinner, it still retains its fluffiness & moistness. Their batter is soft and still has a nice chewy bite, without being too dense or tough. The crust at the edges of the pancake also hold that satisfying brittle crunch. More important is they don’t stinge on the fillings despite the cheap pricing.
TheIr bestseller is the Peanut Butter Pancake & the Coconut Pancake. t’s being reputed that customers still travel all the way to Granny’s Pancake just for these 2 types of pancakes. Myself, I’m pretty old school and will stick to the original Peanut filling.
If you have the chance to visit your Granny for pancakes, let me know what you think ?
