Bringing glam back to Kampong Glam, Farrer Horse is tucked into the atmospheric Sultan Hotel. Built across two levels, with a bright dining area on Level 1 and a lounge bar upstairs, it allows for boisterous family meals as well as quiet drinks at The Stable.

The equestrian reference is subtle, finding voice in the menu and aesthetics. The cleverly formulated beverage menu has local favourite racehorses such as Rocket Man sharing the limelight with global celebrities like Seabiscuit. The cleverness in the cocktail menu is not limited to their names, but also the choice of spirits used. The very talented bartender uses offbeat spirits such as shochu and pisco, giving an Asian twist to well-known cocktails like Old Fashioned and Whiskey Sour.

Papad & Dips

The food menu too showcases local favourites with an added twist. Kueh Pie Tee is reimagined as Duck & Prawn Pie Tee with a base of old-school coleslaw topped with smoked duck or poached prawns.

Salad & Tea

The playful combination is surprisingly delicious and great as a starter along with the very addictive papad basket. If you’re ordering drinks, the chicken karaage sprinkled with furikake is a crunchy bar bite that we couldn’t get enough of. Pair that with the green chutney served with the papads and you have a winning (albeit spicy) combination.

Talking of spice, if your heat tolerance is high, try the Otah Ravioli where dumplings take the shape of Italian pasta in a creamy, chilli padi sauce. Fiery as it is, the ravioli casing is paper thin and the dish a wonderful interplay of east-meets-west.

Secretariat

Or you could play it safe and pick sides. East is well represented by a Kaffir Lime Chicken Curry served with rolls of roti jala, Malaysian net crepes that work well to mop up the spicy curry. For those with a more conservative palate, the Lamb Chops are cooked to perfection, glazed with a rum sauce and served atop potato wedges.

However stuffed you are, do not leave without trying the Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta. Sometimes, beauty is in the simple things and this wobbly dessert is proof. Clean and pure flavours cleanse the palate after a meal that teasingly pushes the limits of your comfort zone. Add Farrer Horse to your list of places to head to for a hand-crafted cocktail amidst sophisticated surrounds.
