  • Experience British Dining with a Modern Twist at Carnaby Singapore

Carnaby, the latest venture from The Goodburger, the innovative food truck and burger pioneers, has taken over the former Three Buns Robertson Quay location, bringing a vibrant new British diner and music bar to Singapore. Carnaby, led by celebrated former Potato Head executive chef Adam Penney, has quickly established itself as a go-to destination for elevated British comfort food and handcrafted beverages. Since its debut in July, Carnaby has seamlessly blended British charm with a modern twist, enhancing the local dining scene with its refined take on traditional fare.

Carnaby, located in the vibrant Robertson Quay area, has a one-of-a-kind interior that combines raw, industrial elements with contemporary British design. The restaurant retains the exposed chipboard aesthetic of its predecessor while also incorporating modern British decor inspired by London's iconic Carnaby Street. The ambiance is both relaxed and inviting, with the goal of providing diners with a comfortable environment in which to enjoy exceptional food and drink while listening to classic British music.

Carnaby's menu reflects Chef Penney's extensive experience and enthusiasm for British cuisine. From his Dublin roots to his time at prestigious London restaurants, Penney adds a sophisticated twist to classic dishes, demonstrating that British cuisine can be both comforting and inventive. The menu includes dishes that highlight high-quality ingredients such as smoked haddock from Scotland, fresh local fish, and award-winning English cheese. The Carnaby Burger, which includes a custom beef patty, cave-aged cheddar, and a homemade sauce, as well as the Welsh Rarebit and Steak & Guinness Pie, are all noteworthy.

Vegetarians are also well-served, with options like the Impossible Carnaby Burger, made with a plant-based patty and Baron Bigod brie, and the Summer Garden Risotto, which features fresh spring vegetables and English-style parmesan. Dessert options include the 'Allo Treacle Tart, a sophisticated take on a classic with salted caramel and chantilly cream, and the Sticky Toffee Date Pudding, a comforting winter favourite with butterscotch sauce and house-made vanilla ice cream.

In addition to its food offerings, Carnaby serves a carefully curated selection of handcrafted cocktails and speciality beers, including draft pints from Scottish brewers Brewdog and Peroni. The bar menu features one-of-a-kind creations such as The Bridgerton, a modern take on an English Garden, and The Twiggy, a tribute to the 1960s fashion icon.

Carnaby also intends to add breakfast options and a traditional Sunday roast in the near future, demonstrating its commitment to providing a full British dining experience. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday, with lunch and dinner options to suit both casual and more refined guests.

Gosh Carnaby was so good!!

Honestly, when I heard we were going to test out a new venue offering English pub food I was a bit “ho hum”.  I mean English food is not exactly the most renown cuisine, even old favourites like fish and chips can so easily fall flat.  But Carnaby was a delight from start to finish. The official “blurb” will tell you this is elevated British pub food and it really is!

We started with four appetisers - silky smooth chicken liver parfait served on toasted brioche with a hint of truffle and pickled red onions, a sublime tomato salad speckled with 18-month-aged cheese from Wales (the simple things done well are often the best), smoky, creamy cod dip with crunchy crackers and the special for the day, fish head in a delish Asian inspired sauce that delivered layers of complex flavours. All of these dishes were well executed and tasty, with the fish head and tomato salad a highlight.

Moving on to the mains, Carnaby takes familiar British pub classics and reimagines them with a fresh twist. The fish and chips were exceptional: crunchy and juicy, made with local snapper caught daily from the waters of Pulau Ubin. The hand-cut potato chips were perfectly crisp, complemented by tartare sauce and zesty coleslaw (the pickled onion was a nice touch).

The signature burger, a nod to the venue’s burger joint origins, was juicy and perfectly rare, nestled in soft, tender buns. The smoked fish pie, topped with piped mashed potatoes, was creamy with delightful bursts of mustard seed, while the steak and Guinness pie boasted a rich meat filling enhanced by gelatinous beef tendons and a buttery puff pastry. Served with charred broccolini, that was a hearty and satisfying feast.  Worth noting that the menu has a surprising number of veg options given its anchor in British pub classics.

But of course, we couldn’t complete the experience without dessert. Carnaby’s twist on Eton mess—served in an old-fashioned sundae glass—featured luscious strawberry syrup, fresh strawberries, creamy ice cream, and crunchy meringue bits. The treacle pudding was generously rich with toffee flavours and drizzled with toffee sauce. Trifle and a tart were also on offer but I was too stuffed to give those my full attention!

What truly stood out about Carnaby was the passion and dedication of Chef Adam. His love for the food was evident in every dish, and the ingredients reflected his dedication to utilising the produce available to him, firstly from Singapore and then from offshore if need be. His stories of constructing each dish were a joy, further echoed by his partners from @thegoodbrugersg, and the service was some of the best I’ve experienced in Singapore.

The service team’s energy reflected Adam’s same joy —one bartender even stepped out to clear a plate because he noticed it needed attention while the rest of the team was busy. The décor and music were the cherry on top. This could have the soundtrack of my life with a constant stream of British hits from the 80’s playing, our table at points stopping mid-mouthful to break out into spontaneous song. Such fun!!

With plans for Sunday roasts and English breakfasts on the horizon, Carnaby is definitely a place you don’t want to miss. I can’t wait to return—next time, I might even bring my disco shoes!
