Berlin65, located in Telok Ayer's bustling CBD neighbourhood, is a fresh addition to Singapore's eating scene. Since its debut in October 2023, this one-of-a-kind restaurant has quickly become a destination for visitors seeking an authentic Berlin experience. Lorenz Raich and Stephan Zoisl, co-founders and chefs, were inspired by Berlin's cosmopolitan cuisine scene and brought a menu to Singapore that encapsulated the different flavours of the city's 12 districts.

The restaurant's design pays homage to Berlin's diverse cultural heritage. The menu features a delectable blend of German classics, Asian street food, and Middle Eastern specialities, reflecting Berlin's distinct culture. From the renowned Currywurst to the Turkish-inspired Döner Kebab, each meal tells a story, allowing guests to experience the best of Berlin without leaving Singapore.

The voyage begins with appealing bread selections, each costing $4.50. Choose between Simit Bread, a Turkish ring-shaped delicacy with sesame and molasses; Turkish Flatbread, light and airy with a garlic yoghurt sauce; and real German Pretzels served with butter. The starting menu also offers refreshing salads such as Watermelon and Cherry Tomatoes, which combine the sweetness of the fruit with herbs and feta cheese.

Mezze dishes are ideal for sharing, with homemade hummus that is creamy and tasty, as well as Keto Cauli Hummus, which is low in carbs. Heartier meals, such as Königsberger Klopse (tender veal and beef meatballs in a white roux with tart capers) and Caviar Potatoes (fluffy cooked potatoes topped with trout roe and sour cream), provide a flavour of Berlin's substantial cuisine.

For the main course, Berlin65 serves a variety of street food staples. Currywurst, a Berlin speciality, is served with two pork sausages slathered in a creamy German-style curry sauce and can be ordered as a mezze or a main dish. The Döner Kebab is the menu's centrepiece, with several varieties available, including The 1972 Berlin Original, which features spit-roasted chicken, and Banh Mi Döner Kebab, a unique fusion with pâté, pickles, and sriracha. The menu also includes Adana Kebabs from Turkey, which are served with basmati rice, shredded onions, and pickles.

Berlin65's dessert menu concludes the dining experience with the famous Berliner, a traditional German donut with a smooth, pillowy centre filled with vanilla custard or jam. The drink menu features a variety of beverages, including the classic Turkish yoghurt drink Ayran and the special BRLO Pale Ale, a refreshing beer imported from Berlin's Kreuzberg district. The restaurant also serves a carefully curated variety of cocktails, German whisky and international wines.

The ambience at Berlin65 is intended to bring diners to the heart of Berlin. The 40-seat restaurant has sleek grey-toned walls, graffiti art, and a cosy open kitchen where visitors can see the chefs at work. The interior design, inspired by Berlin's metro stations, produces a relaxing and welcoming feel.

Berlin65: A Taste of Berlin in the heart of Singapore's food district

Step into Berlin65 and you're not just stepping into a restaurant; you're stepping into a vibrant slice of Berlin right in the heart of Singapore's Stanley Street. From the moment you're greeted by the exuberant host Laurence, you know you're in for a fun dining experience.

The atmosphere buzzes with energy, thanks to funky Berlin street art adorning the walls and a lively cocktail bar that promises some serious mixology magic. It's the kind of place where you can let loose, kick back, and indulge in comfort food done right.

Speaking of comfort food, Berlin65 doesn't disappoint. We kicked things off with a classic pretzel bread that was warm, soft, and oh-so-delicious. Paired with their creamy hummus, it was the perfect start to our culinary adventure.

But the starters were just the beginning. We dove into a smorgasbord of Berlin street food delights, from the hearty Konigsberger Klopse (veal and beef meatballs with caper sauce) to the indulgent Caviar Potatoes (boiled potatoes with trout roe, sour cream, and dill). And let's not forget the classic Currywurst - a pork sausage smothered in curry ketchup and kewpie mayo that hit all the right notes.

But it wasn't all about indulgence. We managed to sneak in some healthier options too, like the refreshing Watermelon and Cherry Tomatoes salad with feta, basil, mint, and parsley. It was the perfect palate cleanser between bites of rich, savoury goodness.

For the mains, we couldn't resist diving into Berlin's iconic Doners. The 1972 Berlin Original, packed with chicken from the spit, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red cabbage, tomato chilli sauce, garlic yogurt, and fresh chilli, was a flavour explosion in every bite. And The Banh Mi, with its tantalising combination of chicken from the spit, chicken liver pate, Vietnamese pickles, lettuce, tomato, sriracha, and coriander, transported us straight to the streets of Hanoi.

And let's not forget the drinks. Berlin65 boasts a fabulous selection of beers and cocktails, all at very reasonable prices. Whether you're craving a crisp lager or a creative concoction from the mixologist behind the bar, you're sure to find something to tickle your taste buds.

In the end, Berlin65 isn't just a restaurant; it's an experience. It's the perfect destination for a fun, casual night out with friends, family, or colleagues. So gather your crew, grab a table, and get ready for a hearty feast that won't break the bank. Berlin may be thousands of miles away, but at Berlin65, you're just a bite away from its vibrant culinary culture. Cheers to that!
