Why is Liposculpture, also known as Liposuction a popular surgery procedure for both men and women?

In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with Internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon Dr Marco Faria Correa to learn about liposculpture, also known as liposuction.

To understand more about this procedure, I asked Dr. Marco to give our readers some insights of the difference between Liposculpture and the more widely known procedure Liposuction.

Dr Marco explained the term Liposuction is more commonly use for a fat removing procedure targeting areas of your body affecting the silhouette of your body shape. Liposculpture on the other hand is the term used to describe a combination of liposuction and fat grafting – or fat transfer – to enhance areas of the body to produce a fuller appearance.

In the words of Dr Marco, “liposuction and liposculpture are essentially the same. Not unlike a renaissance sculpture who, carved his beautiful figurative sculptures from raw rock, also a plastic surgeon using his modern and refined surgical instruments to bring out the charm, perfection and beauty of the human body.”

Dr Marco explains, “liposculpture is the most suitable procedure to contour the body by eliminating areas of stubborn fat, using the fat grafting – or fat transfer procedure to improve a patient’s silhouette.”

“Certain areas of the body are prone to pockets of fat that do not respond to exercise or healthy eating. These are the areas that liposuction surgery can target to eliminate unwanted, stubborn fat resulting in a more refined figure.”

After a fascination and insightful 30-minute video interview with Dr. Marco, I learn liposuction is a surgical procedure applicable to both, men, and women, who have areas of localized fat, desire a slimmer, trimmer figure, have a need to reshape their body by targeting and refining troublesome areas, creating the svelte shape as the result.

Liposuction or Liposculpture, sometimes referred as lipo by patients may significantly slim and reshape specific areas of the body including:

  • Hips and Buttocks
  • Abdomen and Waist
  • Upper Arms
  • Inner Knee
  • Chest Area
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Back

Fat is a natural filler, considered the best filler, because it is part of your own body, and it improves the skin texture. Fat grafting is also frequently use for hands rejuvenation, that is one of the most requested procedure for the 60’s and above. Fat removed by liposuction is frequently transferred to enhance the buttocks – which is commonly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift – breast augmentation, or to improve breast contour, to fat grafting of the face, to improve the cheek area, to rejuvenate the smile line, or for the lip augmentation

Liposuction can be performed alone, or along with other Plastic Surgery procedures, such as a Facelift, Breast Reduction, Breast Augmentation, or a Tummy Tuck.

It is important to clarify; Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for a proper healthy diet and exercise. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite, lax or loose saggy skin. And Liposculpture works best if the patient has good natural skin elasticity.

Liposculpture is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. A cannula is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum, or syringe attached to the cannula.

The improved body contour becomes apparent when the initial surgical swelling and fluid retention – commonly experienced following your liposuction procedures – subside.

As a parting question for Dr. Marco we discussed the desired result patients could expect from Liposculpture surgery. In summary…

  • improvement of facial and body contours by removing and transferring unwanted fat deposits
  • improvement of patient´s body comfort and quality of life
  • a shaped body with an enhanced silhouette improving self-image, self-confidence, and self-esteem in patients.

Always consult a Plastic Surgeon before deciding whether Liposuction is the right surgery for you and most importantly, keep in mind, a sensible diet and consistent exercise must be maintained after surgery to keep the result you set out to achieve.

Dr. Marco is a pragmatic surgeon who has mastered the traditional open and minimally invasive methods of Plastic Surgery by applying the latest techniques for properly hiding the scars in the anatomical folds and crease of the skin, leaving inconspicuous scars.

He is a well-versed Plastic Surgeon in the various benefits and limitations of the different procedures and methods; hence, he will always advise his patients on what is the best option to achieve the outcome that they want.
