In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon Dr Marco Faria Correa to discuss Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a Nose Job.
According to Dr Marco, facial beauty is a matter of balance, harmony, and proportion. This is especially true when considering a Rhinoplasty Surgery. It´s not about getting your favourite celebrity´s nose, but a nose that enhances your natural beauty.
What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty, one of the most requested types of plastic surgery - and commonly referred to as a Nose Job, is a surgery to change the shape of your nose by modifying the bone or cartilage.
What Motivates a Patient to Consider Rhinoplasty?
The motivation for Rhinoplasty may be to change the appearance of the nose, to improve breathing, or both. Dr Marco shared with Expat Choice, “people can get rhinoplasty to repair their nose after an injury, to correct breathing problems which can prove to be debilitating, possibly because of a birth defect, or simply because the patient is unhappy with the appearance of their nose."
Possible changes a surgeon can make to the nose through Rhinoplasty include:
- a change in size
- a change in angle
- straightening of the tip
- narrowing of the nostrils
The upper portion structure of the nose is bone, and the lower portion is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change the shape of the nasal bone and cartilage to achieve the desirable nose size and shape.
According to Dr Marco, the surgeon will consider other facial features, the skin on the nose, and what the patient would like to change. When a patient is a candidate for surgery, Dr Marco will develop a customized plan for the patient, then he and the patient will discuss their individual motivation and the outcome expected.
Rhinoplasty does not have an ordered series of steps. Each surgery is unique and customized for the specific anatomy, and goals of the patient having the surgery.
The Nose Job may be performed from inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or through a small external incision at the base of the nose, between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). Dr Marco can change the shape of the nasal bones or cartilage in several ways, depending on how much bone or cartilage needs to be removed, or added.
Dr Marco explain, “for small changes, we may use cartilage from the rib, implants, or bone from other parts of patient’s body.” After these changes are made, the surgeon will close the incisions and put nasal splints into the nose.
Dr Marco also expressed the importance of understanding what Rhinoplasty can and cannot do for the patient and what results are expected. It is very important for all patients to be open and to talk to their surgeon about personal desires and goals of this type of surgery.
If the patient has a small chin, Dr Marco may discuss performing a surgery to augment the chin. This is because a small chin will create the illusion of a larger nose. It is not a requirement to have chin surgery in those circumstances, but it may better balance the facial profile.
Rhinoplasty requires local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on how complex the surgery is. It is important for the patient to discuss which type of anaesthesia is the most appropriate option with the plastic surgeon before surgery.
It is important for Dr Marco to assess each case by case, to understand and consider the real needs of the patient, to choose the indicated techniques that will help to achieve a natural and appropriate result for the patient´s facial features and forehead balance.
Consequently, because of the surgery the harmony and aesthetic beauty of the face will help with one´s confidence and self-esteem.
Dr Marco states, “we tailor treatments specifically to the male and female aesthetic, by considering the patients anatomy and their goals for treatment all while maintaining an appearance, to improve self-image, self-esteem and self-confidence”.
Dr Marco is a pragmatic surgeon who has mastered the traditional open methods by applying the latest techniques for properly hiding the scars in the anatomical folds and crease, leaving inconspicuous scars.
He is a well-versed Plastic Surgeon in the various benefits and limitations of the different procedures and methods; hence, he will always advise his patients on what is the best option to achieve the outcome they desire and expect.
